Jammuites seek LG Murmu’s personal intervention to keep city of temples Covid-free
As Jammu shows way to fight Covid-19 experts press alarm button for coming days

Eatly Times Report

Jammu, Apr 30: Even as the winter capital of Jammu has shown the way to fight Covid19 with all the 26 positive cases having recovered and mere six others left in other districts of the province, the coming days will be crucial and “any mishandling may prove disastrous.”
In line with the orders of the Union Government, the Jammu and Kashmir government is planning to lift some restrictions in the coming days while return of J&K people stranded elsewhere is also a possibility.
While all the cases in Jammu city have recovered from the ailment, experts say keeping Jammu Covid19 free is a major challenge as the winter capital also has a railhead and after May 3, free movement may become a possibility and the winter capital needs to be cautious.
Whereas those stranded who try to come in unorganized way will be quarantined at Kathua, experts say government needs to be cautious about those who are allowed to go home, especially in Jammu.
The experts said the home quarantine of such suspect cases can put Jammu at risk.
A senior virologist told Early Times on the condition of anonymity that even though Home Quarantine for asymptomatic patients is a WHO recommended formula, implementation of such a plan varies from place to place.
Explaining his point the medico said: “Home Quarantine needs a set of protocols like complete isolation of the suspects in such a way that no other family member or resources of the house are shared by other family members. This means that from bathroom to living room to dining space each and everything has to be separate for the case. But how many homes in congested Jammu can actually afford to bear such isolated facilities.”
He said given the poor economic conditions and culture of joint family where from living space to washroom almost every such facility in the house is to be shared, home quarantine can prove disastrous.
“Other family members are bound to get in touch with the quarantined person. And if he or she is infected other family members will easily spread it in the community, starting from mohallas,” explained the medico.
A senior official said the government quarantine for such cases was the most feasible option for coming times. “If administration in Kashmir can keep over 20,000 persons in government quarantine what should prevent the Jammu administration from doing so,” said a senior official in the Civil Secretariat on the condition of anonymity.
He said as per the Disaster Management Act, the final call on the issue would to be taken by the concerned district magistrates.
“The summer capital of Srinagar has been utilizing such powers under DMA and we expect the Jammu administration to take similar steps,” the official said.
Meanwhile the concerned Jammuites have appealed the Lieutenant Governor LG Murmu to personally look into matter to that the “city of temples remains Covid free.
