EARLY TIMES REPORT

RAJOURI, May 2: Taking advantage of lockdown due to COVID-19 pandemic, unscrupulous elements are busy in illegal mining in entire Rajouri district, despite the fact that movement of vehicles has been restricted but astonishingly concerned department as well as the District Administration Rajouri seems to be in deep slumber.
Sources told Early Times that in most of the Sub Divisions particularly Sunderbani, Nowshera, the illegal mining in local rivers has been going on unabated. “JCBs can be seen excavating minor mineral from the river bed, despite the fact that JCBs are not allowed digging the river bed as per Government order but yet violation has been going on under the nose of the Geology and Mining Department,” they said.
They further said that JCBs make deep pits in river bed due to which many people have lost their lives while crossing the river due to failing to anticipate the depth of the river and indiscriminate digging results in imbalances but Rajouri administration has not been giving its attention toward this grave violation.
“Although District Admin has been giving its full attention towards COVID-19 but what about its concerned department, which has turned deaf ears, which clearly indicates that this illegal practice has been going on due to nexus between the concerned department and the illegal minors who are minting money during lockdown,” they alleged.
The vehicles loaded with minor mineral are plying on road without any fear of enforcement agencies, even there is no permission granted to them. Although many complaints in this connection were received by ADC Sunderbani but no action has been taken to curb the wings of the illegal minors till date.
When contacted, the District Geology and Mining Officer, Rajeshwar Singh, said that he has been retired from the service last month and new officer has yet to assume the charge. Meanwhile, when Deputy Commissioner Rajouri, Mohammad Nazeer Sheikh was contacted, he said that he would take note of this issue and strict action will be taken against the culprits.
