Beware! Fraudsters can steal your savings

Early Times Report

Jammu, May 2: Amid the ongoing lockdown, people are getting unexpected and suspicious calls from the fraudsters posing as bank officials, striving to seek personal bank details from account holders to rob them of their savings.
The social media remained abuzz on Saturday with people hailing from different economic backgrounds complaining about receiving suspicious phone calls from persons who present themselves as bank officials, suggesting people about various loan waiver schemes and government benefits they would be entitled to if they share their personal account details.
Shockingly, the calls are made by the persons who speak fluent Kashmiri language and elucidate people, whom they call, about how much they care for their customers and that the government’s financial assistance could be availed by them without any hindrance.
There are also reports that these nefarious miscreants faking as bank officials make calls to people of selected age group and target mostly octogenarians and government pensioners.
A local from Srinagar told Early Times that his father, a government pensioner, received a call from a person who spoke to him candidly while introducing himself as an assistant manager of a local bank branch. The caller then told the pensioner that due to the ongoing lockdown in Jammu and Kashmir, the government has introduced several schemes for the elderly which they can avail without any hindrance. The caller latter tried to persuade him that the amount sanctioned by the government could be credited directly into his bank account if he confirms his bank details. The pensioner in question was later informed by the conman that he should share One Time Password that he would receive on his registered mobile number. “Thankfully, while the call was on, I enquired about the caller. Then I spoke to the caller and refused to provide him any details as I sensed some suspicion,” the local said.
On social media also, there were scores of updates on the issue with people complaining that only pensioners are being targeted by this new money guzzling gang as the elderly are least aware about such scams and the repercussions of revealing the details of their accounts.
There were meanwhile questions being raised that how come these fraudsters have got the personal mobile numbers of the elderly people and their details which are in possession of the banks only.
Meanwhile, a police official told Early Times that it is extremely difficult to locate the numbers wherefrom these scandalous calls are made as most of these calls are being made through the internet with numbers that cannot be traced or tracked. He said that people must be aware themselves about such cons and remain wary of them.
The official added that the elderly should be informed by youngsters not to reveal their bank details or ATM card details to callers as authentic bank officials never seek such information from their customers come what may.
