Power employees criticizes Union govt proposal to privatize sector
5/18/2020 9:36:37 PM
Early Times Report

Jammu, May 18: Power Employees and Engineers under the umbrella of Forum of Engineers and technical staff today organized a meeting to discuss the announcements made by the Finance Minister,Nirmala Sitharaman on the issue of Privatisation of Distribution sector of Power Development departments starting with Union Territories.
The decision comes in wake of the Policy decision being mooted in terms of the draft Amendments being introduced in the Central Electricity Act of 2003 wherein the idea is to separate the content from the carriage which means that the power distribution infrastructure builder and its licensee to supply the power-content shall be separated.
The Government is acting hastily by bringing in these amendments with the ultimate goal of handing over the assets of power distribution sector to the private players who shall muzzle the employees of these state owned power distribution companies as well add to the miseries of the consumers at large, the release said.
It is pertinent to mention that Union Territory of Jammu Kashmir has witnessed turmoil and turbulent times in the last 20 years and at this stage is lacking far behind as compared to other Union territories in terms of per capita income of the consumers. The Power infrastructure in UT Jammu and Kashmir needs revamping and this will take time so that quality power is delivered to the households of the UT.
The far flung areas of Jammu and Kashmir have seen electricity at their homes just recently after the launch of Saubhagya Scheme and having said so, the topography of the UT is such that the rural areas have a very dilapidated infrastructure which is age old and needs attention before burdening consumers.
As far as employees are concerned , the Power department has always received step motherly treatment. The employees were forced to accept the unbundling of the Power Development Department based on certain assumptions that complete budgetary support shall be provided by the Government for the salaries and other dues of the employees from time to time.
However ever since the formation of these companies there have been delays in releasing salaries, Promotions are not seeing light of day, There are Employees who are stagnated at one position for more than 10 years, Regularisation of Engineers has been kept on back burner, the regularisation of daily wagers and regular salary of need based employees is in limbo.
“We are seeing deep sense of distrust and atmosphere of demotivation in the cadres of the employees in general. On top of this, the announcement made regarding privatisation of distribution sector in UTs has created anxiety and fear among the employees who stand united performing tirelessly in the testing times of COVID-19 with full zeal and fervour”, the employees said.
The Power employees and engineers are united and can choose an agitational path on the privatisation issue, if there is any move to bring it to the UT of Jammu and Kashmir. Power employee’s coordination committee after taking all stake holders on board shall strongly take up the issue in its meeting and take decision on further course of action on the matter. Among those present in the meeting were Er.Sachin Tickoo,Er.Vipul Sharma,Er.Sumit,Er.Ravi Khah Er.Sushma,Er.Vandana, Ajaz Kazmi, Sanjeev Bali.
