Munish dismayed over Nai Basti drains being in shambles over 3-decades
Asks administration to come forward to mitigate sufferings of residents

Early Times Report

Jammu, June 9: Editor-in-Chief Early Times, Munish Gupta, on Wednesday expressed dismay over drains not being repaired for over three decades in ward no. 23 at Nai Basti in Gandhi Nagar.
Munish, who would be contesting the forthcoming assembly elections as an independent candidate from Gandhi Nagar constituency, said, “Choked drains at Nai Basti area have made the lives of people miserable. The stink emanating from these drains during the ongoing summer season has multiplied the woes of the people. If immediate attention is not paid it can lead to outbreak of epidemic in the area.”
He said that it’s the duty of the administration to get these drains repaired and cleaned so that people don’t suffer. “It’s unfortunate that helmsmen are not paying any attention to the basic amenities which people need to survive. The ones sitting inside their air conditioned offices need peep outside the window and see for themselves how people are suffering,” he added. Meanwhile, residents of Nai Basti while talking to Early Times said, “We were of the opinion that the elected councilor from the area will become our voice. But electing a councilor has not helped us in anyway.
After winning the municipal elections, the councilor has not even looked towards the people who voted for him.”
A resident Satwinder Singh said, “The drains flowing through our area get blocked every now and then. Garbage getting accumulated in these drains creates lot of difficulties for the residents. It’s unfortunate that even the street vendors throw garbage in these drains.”
Singh said that JMC takes some nominal monthly fee from people in the area to lift the garbage. But the system needs to be streamlined to keep our area clean.
Singh said that the outdated drainage system in the area was constructed nearly thirty years ago and since then no effort has been made to upgrade it.
“Had these drains been covered these would not have got choked. These drains have become garbage bins. Our repeated pleas to get these drains repaired have fallen flat,” he added.
