Jail Mein Surang: SMC defies social distancing norms
7/20/2020 12:14:12 AM

Early Times Report

Srinagar, July 19: Even as the government of Jammu and Kashmir has been asking people to observe social distancing norms and to wear masks in particular, such norms have been brazenly violated by the employees of the Srinagar Municipal Corporation.
It is pertinent to mention that in Srinagar the SMC has been assigned the crucial job of fighting Covid-19 through sanitization and similar works in the summer capital.
But the sources said during the recently held elections of the SMC employees, the employees and their leaders were seen violating the social distancing norms.
Many of them were even not seen wearing face masks even though the SMC has provided its employees with such facilities.
“If the SMC employees behave in such a careless way, what better can be expected from the common men,” said one official on the condition of anonymity.
Sources said during the recently held elections hundreds of SMC employees were seen assembling in the lawns of the office in Karan Singh Nagar and that none of them even bothered to ask employees to set example of fighting the Covid-19.
Officials said under norms the SMC employees should be fined Rs 500 each for not wearing masks. It is pertinent to mention that the administration of Srinagar has fixed a fine of at least Rs 500 and even Rs 1,000 for the one not wearing face mask.
“If there is evidence that the government employees were not wearing masks during duty hours in office and were not maintaining social distancing, why should they not be fined,” said an official of the Jammu Municipal Corporation. “Law should be equal for all,” he added.
It is pertinent to mention that Srinagar continues to be Red Zone for the past around three months as the people are allegedly defying the guidelines as laid down by the government. The district administration has extended restrictions recently.
The situation in Jammu has been under control and the people have been setting example of how to adhere to the laid down norms to fight Covid-19.
