SRINAGAR, Nov 15: Despite a flare up in the cross border shelling from across the border the Deputy Commissioner’s office of Baramulla has no idea about how many people have so far died in such incidents since the past 18 years or so.
This became evident through the medium of a Right to Information (RTI) application moved by a resident of Bijhama, Boniyar-Baramulla. The DC Baramulla’s office does not know about the number of casualties incurred in such incidents and it has no information to the other aspects related to shelling incidents in the district.
Naveed Bukhtiyar moved an application with Public Information Officer (PIO) of DC Office Baramulla seeking details about the number of people who have been injured or died during the cross border shelling from 2002 till August 2020. The RTI applicant also wanted to know about the list of people whose property like house and animals have been killed or damaged in such incidents.
The RTI applicant also posed a question about the list of people who have received the compensation for the loss and damages suffered by them due to the cross border shelling. He also sought inspection of files and relevant documents in this regard under section 2 j (i) of RTI Act. He also wanted to know about the number of compensation cases pending in this regard.
The PIO instead of providing information to the RTI applicant said that the information relating to the number of people killed and injured in the cross border shelling incidents pertains to the office of Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Baramulla. The PIO said that the information relating to damages caused to the property also pertains to SSP Baramulla.
The PIO said that the information relating to the list of people who have received compensation for the loss and damages caused by cross border shelling pertains to the office of Tehsildar Uri. The PIO said that the information about the list of people whose cases are pending for compensation can also be provided by Tehsildar Uri.
Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Headquarters, Baramulla provided information to the RTI applicant about the number of killings and injuries caused by shelling from across the border. The DSP Headquarters Baramulla in the reply said that 73 people have either been killed or injured due to cross border shelling from across the border.
The DSP Headquarters Baramulla said that information relating to list of people who have received compensation for their loss and damage, list of people whose cases are pending for compensation and inspection of files and documents pertains to office of Deputy Commissioner, Baramulla.
