MeT predicts snowfall over weekend in Kashmir parts

Srinagar, Dec 22: Meteorological (MeT) department said the weather is likely to remain dry and cold till the weekend when a spell of light to moderate snowfall is likely at widespread places
While the valley continued to reel under sub-zero night temperature, they said, there was a little improvement in the temperature at a few places.
The summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir, Srinagar recorded a minus 5.2 degrees Celsius. The mercury in the tourist resort of south Kashmir, Pahalgam recorded a low of minus 5.8 degrees Celsius, the officials said. They added that the famous Skiing resort, Gulmarg recorded a low of minus 5.8 degrees Celsius.
Qazigund recorded the minimum of minus 4.6 degrees Celsius, while Kupwara registered a low of minus 2.4 degrees Celsius and Kokernag minus 3.6 degrees Celsius, the officials said. The forty-day Chillai-Kalan commenced on 21 December and ends on 31 January. The period is considered the harshest of the winter when the chances of snowfall are most frequent and maximum. The MET Office has said the weather is likely to remain dry and cold till 26 December forenoon, except for light to moderate snowfall in some areas in the higher reaches of Kashmir.
“A spell of light to moderate snowfall at widespread places in the valley is likely from the evening of 26 December to the night of 27,” the MET Office said.
