Mufti relatives in PDP shy away from DDC polls
12/23/2020 1:16:42 AM

Early Times Report

Jammu, Dec 22: Even as former Chief Minister and Peoples Democratic Party, President, Mehbooba Mufti claims to be strengthening her party, her own close relatives who also happen to be senior PDP leaders stayed away from the District Development Council (DDC) elections.
Sources said the PDP didn’t have any major faces for campaigning for the party for the DDC elections, particularly in south Kashmir, which was often seen as the “stronghold of the party.”
Interestingly, none of the relatives of the Muftis, who also enjoy good position in the PDP contested the elections, though they were seen as “mature faces in the party.” In the previous PDP-led government, such leaders were calling the shots.
Sources said many such leaders apprehend that “being active in the PDP would not be good for their future and thus stay away from party affairs on one pretext or the other.”
Even though some of the close relatives of Mehbooba Mufti including her uncles and cousins happen to be party leaders and have also remained ministers in the past, none of them was seen willing to contest DDC elections not were active in the polls.
“The bitter reality about the elections remained that none of the key relatives of Mehbooba Mufti, who otherwise also happen to be senior leaders were seen active in the elections when she was personally leading from the front,” said a political observer.
Sources said since the abrogation of the special status of Jammu and Kashmir on August 5, 2019, the party has been unable to keep its leadership united.
While many of the prominent faces abandoned the party to join other groups, her relatives have been largely absent for the political turf.
Sources said given the absence of her relatives, Mehbooba has been banking mainly on youth faces.
“If you look at the party meetings or conventions held since her release she is generally flanked by youth faces as one is unable to see any senior leaders,” said a PDP insider on the condition of anonymity.
Despite repeated attempts, the PDP leaders were not available for comments.
