Early Times Report

Jammu, Feb 18: Even as a 20-year-old woman was allegedly raped by a married man from Chattisgarh in Rehari Colony area of the old city here on February 14, the same day the administration launched women safety squads in Srinagar.
On Monday, a woman was raped in Jammu city. The accused has been identified as Mohan Singh, 32 of Chattisgarh, who works as a car washer. He has a 10-year-old daughter.
“The incident took place on Monday when the victim was alone in her rented accommodation in Rehari.
Her parents were out for work and the culprit, who lived in the same locality, forced his entry and raped her.
We have registered an FIR under Section 376 of the IPC at Pacca Danga police station.” police said
“The accused is absconding but we have launched a manhunt to nab him,” said the police.
The medical examination of the victim was conducted on Wednesday.
Ironically on the day, the woman was raped in Jammu, the Srinagar Police launched Women’s Safety Squads.
The Srinagar district police launched two women’s safety squads for ensuring safety and security of women in Srinagar city. Senior police officials were present at the occasion.
Officials said initially two squads have been launched to patrol areas around coaching centres, schools, colleges and other vulnerable areas in Srinagar city.
This squad is working in close coordination with PCR vans, jurisdictional police stations and women’s Police Station, Rambagh.
But for the winter capital of Jammu, “such a dedicated service is awaited.”
The Early Times had reported that even as Jammu bears the brunt of crime against women, why no squads were launched in Jammu.
“Presence of women safety squads are deterrents for crime against women but here for Jammu the administration seem to be in no hurry,” said a senior official on the condition of anonymity.
