NHPC Needs To Wake Up
4/1/2022 11:17:59 PM
The National Hydro Power Corporation (NHPC) has disappointed the residents of the areas living around the Salal Hydel Power project in Reasi district.
The inhabitants are up in arms against the NHPC for failing to discharge its duties under the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). The company has constructed a few passenger sheds in the areas adjoining to the dam and these are not even used by the people.
The NHPC has turned the areas around the dam into a garrison. People living there have to seek permission from the NHPC authorities to shift the sick patients to hospital during night hours. The residents within 5 kms of the dam were promised free electricity but till date they haven’t got a single unit as free.
The NHPC could have done a lot to develop the areas around the Salal Hydel project but the company has not been able to do much. The people are accusing the NHPC of using their resources first and then dumping them. Even the administration has turned a blind eye towards the sufferings of people. It has not intervened to tell the NHPC that it cannot ignore the denizens of the area.
The NHPC should understand that it cannot take people living around the Salal Hydel Power Project for granted. The power project has come on the land of natives. They deserve jobs, roads and other basic facilities, including free electricity. Constructing useless sheds on the name of Corporate Social Responsibility is not enough. The company has to take more initiatives to ensure that people don’t feel ignored. They have to be reassured that their land hasn’t been snatched.
The NHPC instead of passenger sheds could have constructed public toilets as there are no public conveniences for the people in the areas around the Salal Hydel power project. The NHPC could have constructed a school, a library or any such place that could have been of some use to common people.
The NHPC needs to be told that it cannot run away from its responsibilities. Nor can it just give lollipops to people. It needs to provide alternate road to the residents so that they don’t get caught in a difficult situation in case of an emergency. The NHPC needs to wake up before people hit the streets and the situation takes an ugly turn.
