Early Times Report

Jammu, Apr 1: Residents of Chakmangam in Samba district staged a massive protest against the Power Development Department for sending hefty electricity bills to them.
Talking to reporters protesters said that PDD has sent bills amounting to Rs 1 lakh to the people using one bulb and one fan. “Many of them are living under Below Poverty Line (BPL). How can these people pay such hefty bills.”
They said, “These poor people used to pay Rs 100/ per month as electricity bill. But that money has not got deposited anywhere. Their old bills have been accumulated and they are being asked to pay through their nose.”
“We are demanding that old bills should be waived off and a new beginning needs to be made,” they said.
An old lady said, “I have received a bill of Rs 1.15 lakhs. I use one fan and one bulb. My children are daily wagers. We can’t pay such a huge amount. We are poor people but it seems that all rules have become applicable on us.”
A protester said, “People of Jammu are being shown the dreams about thousands of crores but it seems all the benefits are available only for big industrialists and businessmen.
The present regime has got nothing to offer to the poor people.”
