Civilian, Two LeT militants killed in Kulgam gunfight

Kulgam, June 22: Two militants and a civilian were killed in an encounter in Kulgam on Sunday. Fierce gun battle between security forces and militants broke out Sunday evening in Redwani Bala area of Kulgam district after forces received a specific input about the presence of militants in the village.
Officials said that militants fired on forces when they were cordoning off the village triggering an encounter. Encounter till late evening on Sunday, however was operation was suspended due to darkness. "Firing continued for about 40 minutes in the evening after which operation was suspended. In the morning gunfight resumed at around 7:15 am during which the militants were naturalized," a police officer said.
During the gunfight a civilian sustained critical injuries after forces allegedly fired on protesters who were trying to help militants in escaping from the spot.
Youth, identified as Asif Ahmad Tantary s/o Sonullah Tantray was shifted to a nearby hospital, however he succumbed to his injuries.
Two local militants who had recently joined militancy ranks in the area were neutralized by the forces in the gunfight after re-establishing a contact.
Slain militants were identified as Javid Ahmad Bhat s/o Abdul Rehman Bhat R/o Redwani Bala and Idrees Ahmad Nengroo s/o Gh Hassan R/o Badroo Yaripora. One AK47 and one SLR which they snatched from police constables in two separate incidents were recovered from their possession. "As soon as Police and army's 1 RR laid a cordon around the village, militants fired on forces triggering an encounter," SP Kulgam told media. He claimed that the civilian received a stray fire from militant's side and died. "He (Youth) was 400 meters away from the encounter site and received a stray fire of the militants," SP Kulgam, Mumtaz Ahmad said.
