Mufti reiterates commitment to provide relief to flood affected people

Early Times Report
SRINAGAR, June 22: Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed today once again reiterated his government's commitment of rehabilitating the flood affected people in the state before the onset of the winter this year. Mufti said that government will not sit back unless and until each and every flood affected person is rehabilitated.
Chairing the District Development Board meetings of Anantnag and Kulgam districts the chief minister assured that well before the onset of winter, all those who have suffered damages to their houses in the colossal floods of 2014 will be adequately compensated. He said a central team is visiting the state for taking stock of the post flood situation.
"The central team is soon visiting the state to take stock of the post-flood situation, but I assure that the state government is committed to adequately compensate those people who lost their homes in last year's flood," said Mufti. He said government's commitment is to provide succour to the flood hit people and it will not hold back in this regard.
It would be in place to mention here that chief minister had last month made an announcement that the rehabilitation process of flood hit people would be completed well before the onset of holy month of Ramadan. However, given the 'cold shouldered' attitude of Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government at the centre, the chief minister has been forced to reschedule completion of rehabilitation of flood affected people.
Business chambers and civil society groups have appealed Mufti to take up the flood package issue vigorously with the Government of India so that adequate compensation is given to the flood hit people. They have also been demanding that due compensation should be given to the traders who had not insured their stocks and suffered huge losses in the devastating deluge.
Pertinently, after taking over as the chief minister of the state Mufti ordered for compiling list of the non-insured traders so that compensation is given to them. Following this hundreds of relief cheques were given to the non-insured traders across Kashmir particularly in the summer capital of Srinagar that witnessed huge devastation due to the flood.
The recent package announced by the Government of India drew ire from the business chambers, political parties and civil society groups of Kashmir. They took a dig at the Government of India over this issue and said that package announced too meagre and it would not suffice to the demands of the flood affected people. Political parties like National Conference and Congress held press briefings over the issue and condemned the Government of India on the issue. Business chambers also addressed the media and threatened to launch an agitation if the corrective measures are not taken at the earliest.
