BJP has forfeited moral, political right to remember Shyama Prasad Mookerjee
Martyrdom in Srinagar on June 23
6/23/2015 12:31:00 AM
Early Times Report
JAMMU, June 22: Founder of Jan Sangh, Shyama Prasad Mookerjee, entered Jammu & Kashmir in June 1953 breaking the obnoxious permit system at Lakhanpur, the gateway to the state. He willfully violated the law that had barred the people of the state from visiting any other part of India and the vice-versa. Courtesy: The soft approach of then government towards the state that had acceded to India as per the constitutional law on the subject.
As was expected, the so-called then Wazir-e-Azam of the state Sheikh Abdullah, a communalist and votary of greater autonomy bordering on sovereignty, had Mookerjee arrested. The nationalist of nationalists Mookerjee died in Srinagar in mysterious circumstances in a makeshift jail.
In fact, he sacrificed his life in Kashmir for the national cause. Not only Mookerjee, over a dozen other nationalists also laid down their precious lives between 1952 and 1953 in different parts of Jammu region during the historic movement known in the political history of India as "Ek Nissan, Ek Vidhan and Ek Pradhan Movement". The secularists and separatists term this movement in Jammu as "communal" and anti-Kashmir" and also say that this movement "alienated Kashmiri Muslims from India".
Earlier, Mookerjee had opposed Article 370 under which the state enjoyed a separate status within India and fought for the state's complete political and constitutional integration into India. His single-point agenda was to create an environment in the country that would force then government to scrap Article 370 and establish parity between J&K and other states of the Union at all levels. The fact is that Mookerjee did all that he could to bring J&K closer to India by making the then administration extend all the central laws to it.
The so-called nationalist Sangh Parivar (of which the Jan Sangh and after Jan Sangh the BJP was part) used to observe June 23 every year as martyr's day. They used to raise the slogan "jahan diya balidan Mooker ne, wo Kashmir hamara hai" (Kashmir is ours where Mookerjee sacrificed his life). "The Parivar would," according to nationalists in Jammu, "mislead the nation every year on June 23 by claiming that it drew inspiration from the martyrdom of Mookerjee and it stood for what Mookerjee stood for, fought for and laid down his life for".
It is now manifestly clear that the Sangh Parivar was never committed to what Mookerjee stood for, fought for and laid down his life for. It only misled the nation in general and people of the state in particular. That the Sangh Parivar in general and the BJP in particular were not committed to what Mookerjee preached could be seen from the fact that the BJP dropped Article 370 from its agenda in September 2014 to appease separatists and votaries of greater autonomy and self-rule in Kashmir outraging the sensitivities of the patriotic sections of the state society. (Actually, the BJP abandoned Article 370 way back in the late 1990s to enjoy power at the centre.) It not only abandoned Article 370, which it exploited to the hilt for years to expand its constituency across the nation, but also gave mandate to "Hina Bhat of Kashmir wali" who had threatened that "she would turn a militant and pick up gun in case the BJP included Article 370 in its 2014 election manifesto", which was got printed but not released because it did contain a reference to Article 370. The BJP released what they people call "visionless" Vision Document which had no reference whatsoever to Article 370.
Not just this, the RSS-plant in the BJP Ram Madhav, along with others, including from Kashmir, formulated agenda of Alliance which declared in unambiguous terms that the existing politico-constitutional status of the state within India shall be maintained. In other words, it accepted the Kashmiri demand for the retention of Article 370. It became part of the government in the state and its ministers took no time to hoist the state's red flag within the premises of sacred Pt Prem Nath Dogra Bhawan. The BJP ministers, BJP leaders and senior RSS functionaries have been happily using cars carrying the red flags. In other words, the BJP humiliated martyr Mookerjee day in and day out just for the sake of holding some unimportant positions in the state government after March 1. The agenda of alliance not only again and again murdered Mookerjee and abused his ideology for power and pelf, but also provided for everything that suited separatists and anti-national forces in the Valley and rendered the people of Jammu and Ladakh unreal and hapless. The BJP and the RSS have been defending their alliance with the Kashmiri party under the garb of the mandate the BJP got in the assembly elections.
Much can be written on the obnoxious U-turn after U-turn the BJP and Sangh Parivar took even before and after the formation of the coalition government in the state, but the space constraint doesn't permit that. Suffice it to say that the Sangh Parivar and the BJP didn't miss any opportunity during all these days to exhibit their naked lust for power at the cost of the principles Mookerjee stood for, fought for and laid down his life for. The whole truth is that the BJP and the Sangh Parivar have let down the nation in the state and they have forfeited moral and political right to remember Mookerjee and the supreme sacrifice that he made for the motherland in Srinagar this day more than six decades ago. The BJP would do well not to hold any function on June 23 because it hates what Mookerjee stood for. It would an act of political debauchery if the BJP holds any function on the day of Mookerjee's martyrdom. Significantly, Ram Madhav is in Jammu these days. Perhaps, he has come to Jammu to defend the agenda of alliance on the day Mookerjee laid down his life.
