| Docs enjoy picnic, leave patients in lurch | | | Saahil Suhail
Anantnag, July 25: Shockingly, four out of six doctors who were supposed to see patients in OPD at Maternity and Child Care hospital here in south Kashmir took a day off on Saturday putting the hospital administration in a tight spot. Hundreds of patients had to leave the hospital without any medical examination. They raised hue and cry compelling in-charge Medical Superintendent to arrange a doctor and remain available in the hospital.
Attendants and patients questioned the absence of doctors in the hospital who had reportedly gone to Pahalgam on a picnic.
Attendants told this reporter that usually six doctors examine patients in the OPD but today only two doctors were present in the OPD.
"We thought it is because of the strike they (doctors) have skipped duties but the fact is that they have gone for a picnic " said Bilal Ahmad, a Bijbehara resident. Dr Aijaz, In Charge Medical superintendent M&CCH when asked about the absence of doctors said, "You earlier reported that only one doctor remains present during night and patients suffer so we increased the number up to two now and reshaped the roster according to which only two doctors can attend OPD in the day time."
He said that he had discussed the shortage of doctors in the hospital with Chief Medical Officer Anantnag who assured that he would take up the matter with higher-ups. "I told CMO that we need more six doctors. He (CMO) assured me that he would apprise the higher ups about the matter," Dr Aijaz added.
However, a health employee posted in the hospital rebuffed the claims of Dr Aijaz and said that four absent doctors have taken off in violation of rules. "He (Dr Aijaz) can't free all of them. He has to keep in mind the rush of patients in the hospital," he said. |
