Mir for support to PDP, others tread a different path
Crisis in Congress

Early Times Report

JAMMU, July 25: The state unit of the Congress is a divided house. Congress leaders from Kashmir are treading a different path and Congress leaders from Jammu are speaking and behaving differently. In Kashmir, JKPCC chief Ghulam Ahmad Mir wants the PDP to snap ties with the BJP and offers it its unqualified support. The Congress would extend "unconditional" support to the PDP if it snaps its ties with the BJP, he says. "Common people feel betrayed. They are not happy with the performance of the government. They voted for a reason and they are not getting the desired results," he says while offering support to the PDP. He didn't explain what he meant by "they voted for a reason". But it is not difficult to understand what he meant by it. He meant the failure of the PDP to deliver what it had promised to the people of Kashmir during the election campaign and through its election manifesto, also called "An Aspirational Agenda". Let the people read themselves to find what this aspirational agenda says and advocates. It is a must to call the bluff of the Congress leaders from the Valley. It would be only proper to say that their approach and the approach of other Kashmiri parties is the same. The only difference is that Kashmiri leaders operate from different platforms. In Jammu province, the Congress leaders have started behaving differently. Not one but many former ministers, who suffered a humiliating defeat in the last assembly elections, have realized that if they were to remain somewhat relevant in the region, they have to identify themselves with the Jammu sentiment and make common cause with those in Jammu who have been fighting against the BJP and the discriminatory policies. Their attempt to identify themselves with the struggling people of Jammu region and the manner in which they have been supporting the ongoing movement in Jammu region for the establishment of AIIMS in Jammu is a proof that they have finally realized that they would get decimated in case they identified themselves with Mir and the likes of Mir in Kashmir. To be more precise, they have started playing the role the BJP used to play in Jammu region when out of power. They have been using the same language the BJP used against them when out of power. They are today chanting Bharat Mata Ki Jai and shame, shame and they are dismissing the BJP ministers and MLAs as "Jaichands". The fact of the matter is that the Congress leaders from Jammu region have turned Jammu-centric for political reasons and that they are behaving as if they are from a different Congress party. It is a different story that many people in Jammu region don't believe them and their distrust in them is because of their track record. In any case, the change, even if politically motivated, augurs well for the people of Jammu region. One can only hope that the Congress leadership from Jammu region would remain consistent as far as its approach towards Jammu region and the issues it has been facing since 1947.
