Early Times Report
Srinagar, July 25: Despite hectic efforts by the government to make employees ignore the strike call in view of the improving situation in Rajouri, the employees stayed away from their offices.
Apart from shops, other business establishments and educational institutions, even most of the government offices remained deserted putting the PDP-led coalition to apparent embarrassment.
Highly placed sources said, as per the protocol, the civil and police administration was supposed to file details of the attendance of government staffers in the offices on the day of strike, called by Kashmir Chamber of Commerce and Industries.
"But following the massive public response that government offices looked deserted , senior officials thought it would be waste to time and to invite another controversy to single out any government employee as by and large all sided with the strike call," said a source in the administration.
Today when this reporter visited various government-run offices most of the doors were locked or staff missing from their chairs. Attendance was thin at the offices of Finance, Sales Tax, Revenue, Srinagar Development Authority, the Srinagar Municipal Corporation, District Industries office at Bagh-e-Ali Mardan Khan, apart from government schools and colleges here. "All of them have observed Hartal so we can't help you today," a peon could be heard telling some visitors at a government office in Hawal.
Insiders the government top brass was feeling embarrassed as despite the intervention of Minister for Consumer Affairs and Public Distribution Chowdhary Zulfikar, the strike was observed. Chowdhary has yesterday appealed the KCCI and others to call of the strike as life has resumed to normal in Rajauri.
The strike call by KCCI was supported by other business forums, transporters and even private schools. Separatist leaders including Muhammad Yasin Malik and Mirwaiz Umar had also supported the call.
Talking to Early Times, the KCCI President Sheikh Ashiq "thanked the people from all walks of life for supporting the strike call and making it a success". "There was no pressure from our side, people observed this strike out of their own conscious for the sake of our religion, Islam and to give a befitting reply to the communal forces who are conspiring for our communal onslaught," the KCCI President said adding "more pro-Kashmir and pro-Islam programs are to be announced in the coming days."
It is for the first time in the recent past that strike impact remained so visible. The Kashmir Economic Alliance Chairman Muhammad Yasin Khan who is understood to have done "ground work" for hartal said "our unity should serve eye-opener to all."
Khan, who also heads the Kashmir Traders and Manufacturers Federation, accused the Deputy Chief Minister Dr Nirmal Singh of having wrongfully handled the situation in Rajauri. "His biased role forced us to prove that we can go to any extent," Khan said adding BJP happens to be a party which after failing aspirations of Jammu was unduly fuelling communal hatred.
