Street lights that darkened Baramulla town | | | Syed Tahir Bukhari
BARAMULLA, Apr 13: The street-lights which were installed in the Baramulla town especially on the VIP roads like DIG, SSP, SP, District Court have been rendered non-functional due to lack of maintenance. This hampers smooth movement of officials residing in these areas during evening hours and causes immense inconvenience to them. The street-lights worth Rs 1.40 crore were installed few years ago in the town. While Municipal Council Baramulla installed these lights in the civil lines, the Power Development Department (PDD) undertook the job in their hands. Locals of Baramulla town allege that the, "R&B and PDD authorities have failed in installation of street lights, which they had undertake few years back, but couldn't complete the process in a stipulated period of time. Jasbir Singh said, "Perhaps we cannot compete with rest of the state as Jammu division is much advance in every respect as compared to Kashmir division and Baramulla district is completely ignored by one and all from time to time". "Situation does not allow us to move here at night. However, in Jammu city is shining throughout the whole night but here hardly anybody bothers for these street lights" said Singh. Nazir Ahmad resident of Baramulla says a huge amount must have been utilized for installation of these street lights, but only few street light are working here. "If these street lights are made functional, town will definitely remain abuzz with the business activity during the late hours," said Ahmad, a resident. The locals accused the Power Development Department, Roads and Buildings Department and Municipal Council Baramulla of dissociating themselves from the maintenance of these streetlights. According to the residents, the lights developed some technical snag after two years of installation but nobody seems interested in setting them right. Executive Engineer PDD Baramulla, Lateef Ahmad Shah said, "In past the Power Development Department Baramulla has clearly stated that their job was to execute the work, while the maintenance of these lights was to be done by Municipal Council Baramulla, let the Municipal Council take over the work. Executive Officer, Baramulla Municipal Committee (BMC) Imtiyaz Ahmad said, "we don't have funds and equipments to maintain these lights. We are handicapped because of money and manpower. However there is an order copy which states, "The matter is of sensitive nature and needs immediate attention. There is an urgent need to take a policy decision about the maintenance/repairs of street lights with the limits of municipal institutions. |
