Mirwaiz strike on Tosamaidan lease further drifts Hurriyats apart | | | Early Times Report
Srinagar, Apr 13: With Hurriyat (G) questioning the Mirwaiz led faction of the separatist amalgam over timing of agitating the Tosamaidan lease issue, the chances of reunification of two factions seem quite bleak. Mirwaiz Hurriyat had called for strike against possible extension of Tosamaidan lease to the army on Saturday. The strike evoked partial response with the government imposing restrictions in old city-the bastion of Mirwaiz Umar Farooq. The Tosamaidan meadow is being used by the army as `firing range'. According to a Hurriyat (M) spokesman, the firing in the meadow has claimed 63 lives till date besides causing massive devastation to the meadow. The separatists and the civil society have been demanding cancellation of the lease. According to the Hurriyat (G) Mirwaiz should not have raised the issue at this point of point when the separatists are busy with the poll-boycott campaign. "It is an important issue but poll boycott campaign is more important," Ayaz Akbar, the amalgam's spokesman said. Mirwaiz addressed a press conference on the `devastation caused by the army to the meadow' in central Kashmir's Budgam district. While replying questions, Mirwaiz declared elections a futile exercise and also demanded demilitarization of Kashmir. "People are protesting the extension of lease to the army and we will not remain mute spectators to the important issue," he told the media persons. The reaction of the Hurriyat (G) to Mirwaiz's programme on Tosamaidan is being perceived as yet another stumbling block in reunification of the two factions of the Hurriyat Conference. Pertinently, the Mirwaiz Hurriyat suffered a setback recently when Shabir Shah announced his own faction of the amalgam. Massive polling in Jammu causes cracks in coalition Jammu Massive voting in Jammu parliamentary constituency, which apparently is in favour of the BJP, has strained the Congress -National Conference relation to the point of breaking down. The Congress feels that it 'Modi wave' couldn't be stopped because the Omar Abdullah government led coalition government did nothing on account of governance. "We had nothing to sell. The State government is itself involved in so many scams and controversies which are being exploited by the opposition. The Chief Minister is solely responsible for it. Our losses are mainly on account of the incompetence of the government," said a senior Congress leader. The Congress also annoyed on the fact that Omar Abdullah has deliberately accused and abused Narendra Modi to cut down the political grip of the Congress. "Mod has struck a chord with the voters across the country. There was no point of abusing him, as it only annoyed the voters. He should have avoided any reference to Modi and instead focus on the work of the government, for which Congress gave liberal funding. It would have given Congress something to approach the voters. But Omar even took that thing away also," said a senior Congress leader. The Congress leadership of the State has according to the sources come to the conclusion to that going with the Omar in the assembly elections would be suicidal. Party leaders have also suggested that Omar is being perceived as anti-Jammu, and it has been made clear by his action, so it will become a baggage and that too politically incorrect to carry. The Congress leadership is also most worrying because the recent anti-establishment wave has made the party feel insecure even at Doda -Udhampur constituency, which is major worrying factor for the party. "Our tallest leader (Azad) is contesting there. But there is strong resentment in the people, especially in hindus, Omar had annoyed them after Kishtwar violence when he said only one Hindu had died. His action has put party in a soup. If any major reverse did take place we are not going to spare Omar and that is our final decision and party high command would have to accept it leaving behind the equation of Omar's relation with the point man of the party," said a senior cabinet minister. |
