Verbal spar brews hard feelings among estranged (NC-BJP) bedfellows | | | A verbal spar between Chief Minis ter Omar Abdullah and Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) MLAs marred the proceedings of an official function organized by Power Development Department (PDD) to launch 2nd Phase of Restructured Accelerated Power Development & Reforms Programme (R-APDRP) for Jammu region. Omar Abdullah was the chief guest at the launch of R-APDRP scheme of State Power Development Department at Jammu Club here this evening. As soon as Chief Minister flanked by National Conference Provincial president Devender Singh Rana reached the stage to light the traditional lamp, all hell broke loose since BJP legislators led by their Legislature Party leader in the State Legislative Assembly Ashok Khajuria started shouting slogans against Omar Abdullah and coalition government alleging acute power shortage, frequent outages and damaged transformers in Jammu province. The BJP MLAs comprising Sukhnandan Choudhary, Prof Gharu Ram Bhagat, Sham Lal Choudhary, Bharat Bhushan Bodhi and JSM MLA Ashwani Sharma, who were officially invited for the function, while disrupting the function blamed the government for providing electricity to Kashmir valley at the cost of Jammu's rightful share. "People of Jammu are forced to live a miserable life… It has become a hell for Jammuites as you are diverting their power to Kashmir despite a scorching summer," said Ashok Khajuria. While Khajuria was making his point vociferously, National Conference (NC) leader and former MLC Kashmira Singh, who rose to oppose the behavior of BJP legislators, objected to the allegations levelled by the BJP MLAs and asked them to move out of the hall. The objections raised by Singh further infuriated the BJP MLAs, who by then had locked in a bitter war of words with NC leader following which unruly scenes were witnessed in front of the Chief Minister. "Remember it is a government function and not a party programme of the National Conference…. We have every right to speak on issues concerning common man," said a fuming, Ashok Khajuria to Kashmira Singh. The heated exchanges led to commotion at the venue for nearly 10 minutes with the Chief Minister watching the scene silently. BJP MLA Sukhnandan Choudhary and NC leader Kashmira Singh also had a mild scuffle with each other but NC Provincial President Devendra Singh Rana intervened and pacified them. The agitating BJP legislators even had bitter quarrels with PDD officials and the police officers present there when they tried to intervene. "The present regime led by Omar Abdullah is a complete failure," Khajuria said and added that people are facing acute water and power scarcity but the government is hardly taking any steps to improve the situation and provide relief to the people. The protesting MLAs further said that the people of Jammu are suffering due to erratic power supply and continuous power cuts in the prevailing hot weather conditions and the government has failed to meet the aspirations of the people. "There is no schedule for power curtailments…You shut down the supply every now and then," said BJP legislators. Later, the BJP leaders were whisked away from the hall by the security personnel which ultimately paved way for the commencement of the function. |
