Tough for BJP to open its account in Kashmir valley during Assembly poll
7/13/2014 1:20:03 AM
Early Times Report

Jammu, July 12: It is news.Really it is news with substance. It is news having all interesting frills. And the news is that the BJP has plans of fielding party candidates in all the 46 Assembly constituencies in the Kashmir valley. It is news because the BJP is, for the first time in its history, trying to register its presence in the Kashmir valley, in a big way, during the Assembly election, scheduled to be held towards the close of the current year.
Yes,in the past the BJP fielded its candidates from three to four Assembly constituencies but had failed to win. It had fielded its candidates from Baramulla an Anantnag Lok Sabha constituencies during the recent election but its candidates polled a few hundred votes indicating that the BJP is yet to carve out its sanctuary in Kashmir.
It has a tough task in doing so because of the fact that two regional parties, the PDP and the National Conference, have established their strong roots. Even the 76-year old National Conference had failed to win a single seat out of three it had contested in the Kashmir valley in the latest Lok Sabha poll. It was for the PDP to win all the three seats The BJP would like to contest all 46 constituencies in Kashmir even though it has failed to win any seat in the Valley so far. This announcement would have been ignored but one had to take this declaration with seriousness because this announcement was made by none other than the former Inspector General Police, Farooq Khan, who had recently joined the BJP.
Well the BJP does not believe in "we also ran the race" policy and this is evident from the way party leaders sound confident of putting up a good show in the Valley during the upcoming Assembly elections and accomplish 'Mission 44+'. This way the BJP is,for the first time, aiming at forming the Government because its leaders are confident in accomplishing "Mission 44"as 44 seats are needed for forming the Government.
Three main political parties, the Congress, PDP and the NC,which have a plan of contesting most of the seats do not have the confidence in accomplishing "mission 44" and these parties believe that the ensuing election may throw up a hung House warranting a coalition Government. Here the Congress is placed in an enviable position because it has the option open for sharing power either with the PDP or with the NC.
Farooq Khan talks about peoples' desire for change. He believes that people in the Valley stand fed up with voting in favour of either the Congress or the NC or PDP and hence wish to vote for a party that has not been given a chance to rule.
Well there cannot be any restriction on weaving dreams. There cannot be any curbs on day dreaming. There can be no limits to wishful thinking. And the BJP leaders cannot be blamed for wishing to make it big in the ensuing Assembly election.
It would be advisable for the BJP leaders to avoid frittering away party's man power and resources by fielding party candidates in all the 83 Assembly seats,46 in Kashmir and 37 in Jammu. And it can be treated as a big win for the BJP if it is able to win three to four seats from the Kashmir valley.
Instead of being lured by the valley's panoramic beauty the BJP leadership needs to concentrate in the region of Jammu where the party's hold is getting weak day by day despite the fact that it won both the Lok Sabha seats from the valley.
The Janata Party wave had failed to cross into Kashmir valley in 1977 and the Modi wave had failed to grip the valley in the recent Lok Sabha election. If it is so,how can one expect Modi to write the success story of BJP in Kashmir.Majority of voters in Kashmir still believe that vote for BJP is vote for Modi and vote for Modi is vote for Kashmir's full integration with India. They still believe that vote for Modi is vote against retention of Article 370.If this is the attitude of majority of voters Farooq Khan's hopes on accomplishing mission 44 may be belied.
