'Desperate' Omar claims credit for 'desperate' measures taken by coalition Government
Wants to empty state coffers for 'public good'

SRINAGAR, July 12: National Conference-Congress coalition government in the state wants to create financial mess for the new state government and this was aptly proved by the statement of Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah the other day.
Addressing party workers on the 14th death anniversary of his grandmother Begum Akbar Jahan on Friday, Omar had said that he would not hesitate in emptying the coffers of state treasury if it is for the welfare of common masses. He said that People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has been frustrated by his so-called pro-people measures and that the steps would ensure victory for National Conference in the Assembly elections.
The State Government has taken many steps as knee-jerk reaction after both Congress and National Conference suffered humiliating defeat in Jammu and Kashmir divisions respectively. These steps are all set to land the new state government in financial quagmire and it would take herculean task from the new government to tide over the crisis.
Increasing the retirement age of the government employees from 58 to 60 years, regularization of daily wagers in all the government departments, revocation of fixed salary mode and creation of new administrative units are all set to give sleepless nights to the new government. All these measures would need huge financial support and with financial position of state in doldrums the task would be an uphill one.
The Chief Minister may today claim that he has taken many 'pro-people' measures but the truth of matter is that he is taking these steps to salvage some pride.
He has an eye on the Assembly elections but given the anger among the masses against National Conference it is quite likely that he would once again bite the dust. Saner elements in the society have already questioned the timing of taking pro-people decisions.
They say that had the decisions been taken earlier it would have reflected the seriousness of the state government. They opine that coalition partners want to cash in on the sentiments of the people.
It is quite possible that the steps taken by the State Government may boomerang and they might face music at the hands of people during the upcoming Assembly elections. As there is a general notion of under-development across the length and breadth of state both NC and Congress seem destined to taste defeat in the Assembly elections. People in majority of the areas are craving for the basic amenities with protests being carried out by the aggrieved on regular basis.
Given this situation it is quite possible that anti-incumbency wave would go against NC and Congress. At the same time parties like PDP and BJP would cash in with people hoping that change of guard may bring some respite for them. As such one can expect political equation would get changed with fresh faces entering the Assembly while replacing the old ones.
