BUDGAM, Nov 14: The people of this Central Kashmir district have been urging Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) patron, Mufti Mohammad Sayeed to contest from Beerwah constituency so that there is no chance for Omar Abdullah to win from this assembly segment. The people believe that Omar opted to contest from the Beerwah constituency because it has got a healthy vote share of a particular community.
The Omar led government did everything possible to appease this community at the cost of the others, possibly the deserving ones.
"Even a person with little knowledge about the politics can understand that why Omar Abdullah chose to fight it out from the Beerwah constituency. Omar looked for a safe heaven and Beerwah came to his mind because he wants to bank on the votes of a particular community that can decide the fate of the candidates in the fray," said Gulzar Ahmad from Ohangam.
Gulzar said that by doing so Omar wanted to give a message to this particular community that he is their loyal and that is why he has surrendered Ganderbal, once a bastion of the National Conference. As per Gulzar all this is being done to assure the victory of Omar as a means of face saving.
Like Gulzar there are many people who are surprised at this move of the National Conference President to contest the assembly elections from Budgam district which by far is the most neglected part of Jammu and Kashmir witnessing least or no progress in all spheres of life. "What has the Omar led government given to this area and what is he going to capitalize on is beyond the imagination of everybody? Here roads are in shambles, no encouraging health facilities, poor electricity supply and lack of other basic amenities have been the hallmarks of the government lead by Omar," said some elderly people at Rathsun village.
They said that Omar never bothered to visit the area in the last six years where from he has made a mind to contest the elections.
As per these people, he never bothered to look into the problems faced by the people of the area. "It is in the knowledge of everybody that Budgam district has a lot to offer on the tourism front but what has Omar done to promote tourism in the district. He utterly failed to address the issues pertaining to Budgam district and his decision to contest the elections from here simply gives heartburns to the locals and it may prove to be the blunder of his life," said Mohammad Amin from Chewdara.
