Early Times Report

SRINAGAR, Nov 20: Police and security forces claimed to have killed three militants in an operation that culminated late in the evening in the restive Tral area of South Kashmir's Pulwama district. The identity of slain militants has not been established so far.
Sources told Early Times that police and army had specific inputs about the presence of militants in the main market of Tral in the evening. Following this an ambush was laid in the main market and this was followed by an encounter. The encounter was very brief and the militants were killed within an hour or so. There are reports that two other militants have managed to flee from the encounter site.
"The ambush was laid near a bank in the town after inputs that militants are going to pass through the area. The ambush was laid in the evening and there was comparatively less civilian movement. The police and security forces intercepted a group of militants who passed and following this there was a brief encounter," said sources. The sources said that after being intercepted the militants were asked to stop and surrender by police and security forces. Instead of paying heed to this the militants opened fire and there was exchange of firing between the two sides. The encounter was brief one with the militants not able to offer stiff resistance to police and security forces. Some arms and ammunition were also recovered from the possession of slain militants. Reports said the firing incident led to panic in the area and the people who were present in the town ran towards safer places. Although most of the shops had been closed the owners of the shops that were open ran away while keeping their shops open. The situation continues to be tense in the area with the siege yet to be lifted by police and security forces. There are also reports that two other militants managed to run away while taking advantage of darkness.
A police spokesman said that three militants were killed in the encounter that started and culminated in the evening. The spokesman said the identity of the three militants has not been established and efforts are on in this regard.
"A joint patrol party was fired upon by militants at Aab-Ghar Tral. The party retaliated and in the ensuing encounter three unidentified militants have been killed. The identity of the killed militants is being ascertained. One SLR, one carbine, one pistol, some grenades and other ammunition have been recovered from the slain militants," said the police spokesman.
This is the second militancy related incident in the Pulwama district over the past five days. On Sunday last the militants shot dead a civilian in the Dogripora village of this South Kashmir district. As assembly elections are just few days away it is apprehended that there may be a spurt in the militant activities. As such police as well as security forces have to maintain a close vigil over the security set up across Kashmir.
