BJP lacks women candidates in Jammu | | | New Delhi, Nov 20 : A group of ticket-seekers in Jammu and Kashmir at the BJP office said that it was unfortunate that women were missing from the party's list for the region of Jammu. However, it has not put up a single woman candidate in the region. Other major political parties, which, like the BJP, have been supporting the controversial bill for ensuring 33% reservation for women in Lok Sabha and state assemblies, have also ignored women in assembly election. NC has given tickets to three women and Congress and PDP one ticket each to a woman in Jammu region, where there are a total of 36 seats. Congress leader Swarn Lata said this situation underlined need for a women's reservation bill. "If the bill was passed parties would have bound to give tickets to women," she said. Her party colleague Suman Lata Bhagat, contesting from RS Pura is only woman candidate in Jammu, said winnability was the criterion for parties to give tickets. Sources in BJP blamed the absence of women on terrorism and their low participation in the panchayat and zillaparishad levels. However, political pundits reject the argument saying that in valley, where there are 47 seats, the scenario of women's participation was better than in Jammu. The BJP has given tickets to two women candidates-Hina Bhatt from Amirakadal and Darakshan Andrabi from Sonawar. The Congress has given tickets to two women- Shamima Raina in Zadibal and KhemlataWakhloo in Sonawar. In fact, both BJP and Congress have put up women against chief minister Omar Abdullah in Sonawar. The NC has given tickets to SakinaItoo from Noorabad, ShameemaFirdous from Habbakadal. Shehnaz Gania, a NC MLC, said her party has always encouraged participation of women and had a women's wing. Sheikh Abdullah's wife herself had been active. Even in last Lok Sabha polls , there were no women contenders from Jammu region while two women, including PDP's Mehbooba Mufti, won from valley. In the 87-member assembly at present, there are only two women legislators. |
