Seven marathoners from Jammu to feature in Delhi Half Marathon

Jammu, Nov 22: Running for their dreams and spreading the message of success and achievement, a group of seven marathoners from Jammu is taking part in the prestigious 7th Airtel Delhi Half Marathon which is going to be held tomorrow at New Delhi with as many as 32,500 plus participants expected to run in the event.
The group is taking part in the Delhi Half Marathon-2014 (21 Kms) is comprising of Rajesh Padha, 56 years old, Retd SSP Parbhat Singh, 62 years old and Tarsem Lal, 62 years old, who all are participating under Senior Veteran Category.
VK Dogra, 51 years old, Sanjay Saini, 51 years old, and Pawan Sharma, 47 years old, are taking part under Veteran Category where as Gaurav Gupta, 33 years old, will be part of the event under General Category.
Though Rajesh Padha is vastly experienced in running road races as he has participated in three earlier versions of Delhi Half Marathon viz-a-viz taking part in three J&K Police Half Marathons, the six other marathoners from the city of temples are taking part in an international marathon for the first time ever.
Speaking to Early Times, Rajesh Padha informed that participation of as many as seven runners from Jammu in a highly acclaimed event like Delhi Half Marathon will add a new chapter in the annals of long running in the city.
Padha further said that people of Jammu city are slowly but steadily picking up the sport which has not many takers in the state of Jammu & Kashmir.
“When I started to run long distance races there was hardly any marathoners in the city but of late a lot of senior citizens who are physically fit along with youngsters have shown keen interest in becoming a runner,” said Padha.
“I always try to promote marathon in Jammu city in whatever capacity I can…The six participants, who are accompanying me to Delhi for the Half Marathon, took up running on my insistence…They practiced seriously and today I am proud that with their strenuous efforts they are going to be in the Delhi Half Marathon. My only contribution was to motivate them all through the practice sessions,” he added.
Padha while exuding confidence that the number of marathoners will grow in the days to come said that marathon should be promoted in a big way as it is the best medium to remain fit and healthy.
“I hope that more and more people will take up long distance running... It may be challenging but not difficult…Only will-power and inspiration is required to be a good runner,” Padha said.
The Airtel Delhi Half Marathon will be telecast live on Star Sports 1, the Channel Partner, from 6:30 am to 10:00 am. The Airtel Delhi Half Marathon 2014 for Elite men will start at 6:40 am, followed by the Half Marathon for Elite women at 6:50 am. The DHL Corporate Champions will start at 7:00 am, followed by Half Marathon Amateurs 7:05 am, Champions with Disability Event at 7:30 am, the Senior Citizens’ Run at 8:00 am and the Great Delhi Run at 9:25 am.
