Early Times Report

Srinagar, Nov 22: As the pre-election campaign has ended in the 15 Assembly segments that are scheduled to go to the polls on November 25,the political observers observed that separatists call for poll boycott may find response from the voters in Bandipore, Sonawar and Ganderbal constituencies only. As far as 12 remaining constituencies, including Gurez and Kangan may see polling percentage ranging between 50% - 70%. Poll pundits say that major response to the separatists call in the district of Srinagar, Kulgam, Pulwama, Shopian and some adjoining areas. In support of their contention experts said that while in 2002 Assembly polls Kishtwar, Ramban, Doda, Inderwal, Bhaderwah and Banihal registered a polling percentage of 55% in 2008 election polling had touched over 68 per cent indicating that majority of voters were unmoved by the separatists call for poll boycott and these areas may continue to see positive response during polls. As far as four seats in Ladakh region are concerned the two seats in Kargil district are expected to witness high polling. In 2002 and 2008 election the polling percentage in Kargil district's two segments had touched over 75%. Except Leh seat all the remaining 14 Assembly constituencies are to witness muti-cornered contest. The main contest is going to be among the candidates belonging to the PDP, the Congress, the BJP and the NC. In 2008 the Congress and the NC had won seven seats each while the remaining one seat was bagged by the PDP. However, the field reports indicate that the PDP candidates enjoy the upper hand in six out of 15 constituencies. If anything that can pose some problem for the voters in Ramban, Banihal, Inderwal, Kishtwar, Doda and Bhaderwah constituencies it could be from subversive acts of militants. However the security forces have enhanced the security grid in these hyper zones while members of the Village Defence Committees (VDCs) too have decided to help the security forces in tackling any mischief from militants and being the local human resource the VDC members are likely to play significant role in the fate of contesting candidates.
