SRINAGAR, Nov 22 : After launching crackdown on separatists to prevent them from campaigning against Assembly elections in the State, police have cracked whip on alleged misuse of social networking sites and arrested five youth for spreading poll boycott messages on the internet.Police sources said all Facebook, Whatsapp, Twitter and other social networking sites have been brought under surveillance as some youth are involved in creating fake accounts and pages by trying to influence public opinion by promoting election boycott. "Police has identified number of persons found involved in spreading anti-poll messages, rumours, promoting fake news and cases have been registered against them for putting up the fake posts," they said. A police spokesman said police have detained five social networking users for promoting poll boycott on social networking sites, especially Facebook and Whatsapp. He identified the arrested as Sajad Mir and Tabeeb sheikh of downtown Khanyar, Srinagar, ShaukatSalafi of North Kashmir's Bandipora district and Zahid Hamid and MuneebFarooq of Hardpora in South Kashmir's Anantnag district. "Police action against misuse of social networking websites will continue as most of these mischief mongers are being continuously identified," the spokesman said. A police officer said they won't allow anybody to disturb peace during the ongoing election process and social networking sites are being under surveillance. The first of the five-phase polling in Jammu and Kashmir will be held on November 25 for 15 Assembly seats.All the top separatist leaders in Kashmir have called for poll boycott and were planning to launch anti-election campaign. However, before they could have campaigned against polls, authorities launched crackdown against them. JKLF chairman Mohammad Yaseen Malik, Democratic Freedom Party chairman Shabir Shah alognwith dozens of their supporters have been detained. Several leaders and activists of hardline Hurriyat Conference led by Syed Ali Geelani including Mohammad Ashraf Sehrai and Geelani's spokesman Ayaz Akbar have also been detained. Geelani continues to remain under house arrest at his Hyderpora residence. J&K Police Chief K Rajendra has already made it clear that nobody would be allowed to create law and order problem during elections. "Anybody creating law and order problems in the electoral process would be dealt severely," he had said. |
