Erratic distribution of free ration pits neighbour against neighbour in Budgam district | | | Shakeel A Khan
Early Times Report
BUDGAM, Nov 22: The distribution of free ration has become a serious issue in most of the villages of this Central Kashmir district as it has given rise to conflict among the people. While the flood affected all and sundry, it is the families which haven't the ration card have been facing a lot of problems. At most of the villages the distribution of the quota for the month of October invited a lot of trouble, setting a neighbour against neighbour and a result the quota for November still remains undistributed. The authorities are in slumber as the flood affected people continue to suffer for want of the timely distribution of the ration quota. The families which are without the ration cards ask where they should go to get the food grains since they are being denied by the consumer affairs and public distribution department. These families say that they used to get the ration prior to the flood, but now they are shoed away on the pretext that they are not having the ration cards. "I locked the ration depot from the outside as the sales man there categorically denied me my quota which otherwise I used to get before the floods. He declared that government has sent the quota only for those families which are in possession of the ration cards," said GhulamNabi Malik from Chak Soibugh. It is for this reason, as GhhulamNabi said that he locked the ration ghat. He asked that when he used to get his share of ration without any problem before the floods why he cannot figure in the list of the consumers who get the free ration as a means of relief for the flood affected people. He said that his paddy crop has also been destroyed in the recent flood and he cannot be denied the free ration. In Dharmunah village also the distribution process has become a burning issue on account of the demand and supply gap. Here too the relief ration was distributed but not before the heated arguments between the different groups of people. "We have been subjected to the immense inconvenience by the consumer affairs and public distribution department as it has failed to regulate the smooth distribution of the relief. In fact the relief quota for the month of November has been supplied to the ration ghats, but the shutter has not been lifted so far leaving the consumers in pain," said Khurshid Ahmad from Dharmunah. Khurshid went on saying that the distribution for the month of October became possible only when the ration was also given to the families without the ration cards but it was distributed at the rate of only 23 kilograms per family. |
