SRINAGAR, Nov 26: PDP and Congress did well in the first phase of elections held for 15 seats on Tuesday in Jammu and Kashmir. According to the Intelligence reports PDP has clear edge on five seats while it is in close contest on two more constituencies which can go either way.
"In Ganderbal constituency, PDP candidate Qazi Mohammad Afzal could win by a margin of 4000 votes, Nizamuddin Bhat of PDP is likely to retain his seat though with a thin margin of about 1200 votes," a senior Intelligence official told Early Times.
He said the Sonawari constituency is likely to go to PDP's Yasir Reshi who could win by a margin of 2200 votes. In Kangan, PDP candidate, Bashir Ahmad Mir has a clear edge over his rival and NC stalwart Mian Altaf Ahmad, said the official.
He said that Banihal constituency in the Chenab Valley region is likely to go in favour of PDP while on Bhaderwah seat there is a close contest between PDP and BJP.
The reports suggest that on four seats of Leh and Kargil Districts Congress has edge on three seats. "In Leh, Kargil and Nobra constituencies, Congress is having edge over its rivals while as in Zanskar Independent is way ahead of other contestants," the Intelligence official said.
If the reports are to be believed, the Congress party has made a comeback in Ladakh region as there was a perception that BJP may take one or two seats. However, chances of BJP winning any seat in Ladakh are very remote now.
Interestingly, Gurez constituency represented by NC in the current assembly has gone in favour of Congress. Fakir Mohammad Khan of Congress, according to the reports, is leading in Gurez.
According to reports, Kishtwar is going in favour of BJP while as in Doda, Congress has an edge over its rivals. However, reports suggest that GM Saroori of Congress could retain the Inderwal seat. The only seat out of the 15 seats that could go in favour of NC is Ramban.
According to the political watchers, the record voter turnout in the first phase of elections has completely changed the scenario and the results could be surprising in case the brisk polling continues in the remaining phases.
