Early Times Report

KUPWARA, Feb 22: The army claimed recovery of a cache of arms and ammunition, including three IEDs from a hideout during the past 24 hours here in Kupwara district of North Kashmir on Sunday. According to reliable sources, government forces on a tip of information detected three IEDs hidden in the hollow trunk of a tree in Gazrial forests in Kupwara district. A senior government official told, Early Times that, "Based on the specific intelligence inputs received from a unit source, the troops of an Infantry Unit carried out a search operation in the forested area on Khazan Mati Ridge close to Gazrial village. In Warsoun area of Trehgam town of Kupwara district, army troops of infantry unit detected three Improvise Explosive Devices (IEDs) hidden in the hollow trunk of a tree along with other war like stores in the fringes of Gazrial Forest of Kupwara district late evening of Feb 21, said official. Official said, the search resulted in the recovery of three IEDs, two weighing 5 Kgs and one weighing 1 Kg along with 3 Mortar Bombs, 3 UBGL grenades, 61 rounds of AK-47 and one Chinese Pistol with magazine. However official maintained that the IEDs were kept in ready to be used position with complete circuitry, but fortunately we detected them on time, otherwise it would have damaged much. Thus a major tragedy was averted by the recovery and destruction of these IEDs and the ill designs of the militants who intended to cause violence were thwarted once again by the alert troops of the Army. Meanwhile a joint team of army and Jammu and Kashmir Police has launched a search operation in the forest area early this morning again so that to sanitize whole area. It is pertinent to mention here that, on Feb 21, Two Pakistani Lashkar-e Toiba (LeT) militants were gunned down by security forces in an encounter in Rafiabad area of Baramulla district, while as the duo were active in Lolab, Sogam, and Kralgund, areas of Kupwara district.
