srinagar, Feb 22: Former president of women wing of National Conference from Ganderbal, Waheeda Shah alleging that an ex- minister and his aides in Omar Abdullah led regime were involved in sexual exploitation of women for the past one decade has stirred hornet's nest.
If the allegations leveled by the former woman NC leader are probed these can prove to be a tip on an iceberg and lead to startling revelations which can spell doom for the NC leaders, Shah is pointing fingers at and stopped short of identifying.
Addressing a news conference here Shah said, "The NC MLA who recently lost elections and his aides sexually exploited women after assuring them that they would help them get adjusted in different government departments."
This is not for the first time that allegations about politicians exploiting the women on the pretext of providing them with jobs have come to fore. History stands testimony to the fact that politicians indulging in such "murky business" have rocked Jammu and Kashmir time and again.
Shah alleged that she was threatened and tortured by the NC goons to keep her mouth shut. Shah didn't name the politician, allegedly involved in the sexploitation of the women, nor did she identify any of the victims.
Shah opening her mouth after the NC-Congress rule ended in JK speaks volume about the "fear psychosis" prevailing even among the NC frontline activists. "Despite her party being in power why couldn't she muster courage to approach the former chief minister and NC working president Omar Abdullah?" asked an analyst.
He said that may be the woman NC leader could be speaking the truth but why did she remain silent when her party was in power. "Was it the fear psychosis or there were some other reasons due to which she kept mum. Investigations only can reveal the truth," the analyst added.
Interestingly, during the six year of NC-Congress rule none of the NC ministers had to lose their jobs due to any scandal or corruption charges. It was only the Congress ministers who faced the music and had to call it quits after their names surfaced in various scandals. From 2008 to 2014 no one dared to raise his or her voice against the NC ministers. As their rule has ended their own people have raised the banner of revolt and are exposing the "misdeeds" of the people who called the shots during Omar Abdullah's tenure.
Shah said that she came out in open as the Governor's rule is in place in Jammu and Kashmir and the Governor N N Vohra should take the cognizance of the matter and order a probe into alleged "misuse of official position and power" by the ousted NC ministers and MLAs.
A senior politician while talking to Early Times said, "It's really unfortunate that JK's oldest regional party National Conference is at brink and is all set to lose its address in Jammu and Kashmir. The last six years have been the worst period in NC's history as its leaders treated their own people and workers shabbily and left no stone unturned to enjoy all the privileges and reap the benefits of power."
Allegations leveled by Shah are of serious nature and need to be probed rather than being brushed aside. "Her revelations have proved that how vulnerable women were during the misrule of NC and Congress from 2008 to 2014," said an analyst.
She claimed that some politicians "encourage sex trade" in Kashmir and "number of prostitution centres were approved by the previous coalition government."
