Swine flu forces Modi Govt to be on weak wicket
2/26/2015 10:54:20 PM
If the BJP led NDA Government has failed
to tackle a disturbing situation and it is its
inability to deal with HiNi influenza or what is commonly called swine flu that has gripped various states, including Jammu and Kashmir. The TMC Chief,Mamta Banerjee, has said that mosquitoes spread the swine flue. There are many who wish to ask her how did swine flu cast its net in the Kashmir valley, where so far eight people have died and a large number of others are under treatment, when the valley does not breed mosquitoes at this juncture ?Whatever may have been the factors responsible for the spread of swine flu it has caused panic in various states in India.Thank God hitherto some politicians have not held Pakistan responsible for exporting Swine flu to India nor have they blamed China for having sent the viral from across the mountain route.Well Prime Minister Narendra Modi had started his innings,as head of the Government,on a clean state and with a promise that he would be able to resolve various political, social, economic ills that have bedeviled India during the last over 30 years. There are many in the saffron parivaar who do not allow him to work smoothly. It is so because by raising extraneous issues they try to tarnish the image of the Modi led Government.
While the the Government was preparing itself for meeting the opposition barbs on the Land Acquisition bill that has been tabled in the parliament amid loud protests from the opposition, the Government was caught napping as far as its handling of crisis risen out of swine flu.The government came under sharp attack on the spread of the H1N1 seasonal influenza, swine flu. Opposition parties united in the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday and tried to corner the NDA government over the statement by Health Minister JP Nadda on the issue. The most scathing attack was from the Shiv Sena whose senior leader Sanjay Raut made a veiled attack on the government headed by his party's senior ally, the BJP.Raut advised Nadda to not brush the issue under the carpet by saying that everything was "under control". "The Minister says everything is under control. However, the situation has caused panic in the country. Maximum deaths are in Gujarat (Prime Minister Narendra Modi's state)..The opposition held the Government responsible for the spread of swine flu, which has,so far, resulted in the death of a score of people,as it has not been able to tackle shortage of Tamiflu medicine in the country. There is a need for national policy on health. The union Government has been urged by the opposition to follow the pattern adopted by the Government in Uttar Pradesh where the Government has made available anti-swine flu drugs free of cost to the poor. The opposition flayed the central Government despite the claim of the Union Health Ministry that all precautionary measures are being taken to control the spread of the disease. Review meeting was held in December and all states instructed to follow the prescribed plan, including the setting up of isolation cases, training of doctors and protocol to deal with the situation.More or less, the states have followed the procedure, he said, advising people "not to panic but be alert. What seems to have rightly irked the opposition was the union Health Minister,J.P.Nadda's claim that there was no shortage of drugs and infrastructure. This is being challenged from many areas in the country, including Jammu and Kashmir, where people suffer because of shortage of drugs required to treat swine flu.Not only there is shortage of drugs there is lack of adequate laboratory facilities where patients suspected of suffering from swine flu could be tested. The country faces the problem of swine flu HiNi influenza and other viral disorders every year.It is now the duty of the Government to make available all drugs that are required to treat these viral fevers and influenza. In addition to this the union Health Ministry needs to make sufficient funds available to all states for improving, modernizing and developing Laboratory facilities. It would be better if a provision was made for keeping some separate wards in hospitals available for treatment and isolation of HiNi influenza cases.
