Anantnag, Feb 26: Several people including few drivers sustained injuries during a clash which broke out in Khiram village of Anantnag district after sumo drivers allegedly halted mini buses plying on Khiram Anantnag route. Eyewitnesses said that a group of locals came under the attack from agitating sumo drivers. They said that the drivers attacked locals with Kangris and stones during which several sustained injuries including drivers. Irked locals according to eyewitnesses also resorted to stone pelting and damaged few vehicles later. “Soon after the incident senior police officials rushed to spot and brought situation under control,” a police officer told Early Times. “Injured were shifted to nearby hospital for first aid, locals said adding that one Iqbal Ahmad Najar (Student) and Nisar Ahmad Bhat (driver) where identified among the injured hospitalised. Locals accused Sumo drivers of monopolizing the roads and creating hurdles in the smooth plying of traffic particularly of mini buses on the route. "Around 60% population of the village is living below poverty line (BPL) so they can't afford fare of the sumos and prefer mini buses, they said “Keeping this in mind some days ago a delegation of locals approached DC Anantnag and requested him to permit some mini buses on the route via Bijbehara and Mattan,” said Aijaz Ahmad. Irked over plying of mini buses, the sumo drivers thrashed a mini bus driver and threatened him of dire consequences, and when we (locals) asked sumo drivers why they have threatened Mini bus drivers, they attacked us, he added. "Plying of mini buses is not an issue but the ugly incidemnt took place when a group of youth attacked us and damaged our vehicles when two drivers had a scuffle, said Manzoor Ahmad president Dargah Sakhi Sumo Stand. Meantime sumo drivers lodged complaint with police after which police detained few youngsters of the village which further sparked protest in village.
