JAMMU, Mar 4: Mahesh Sharma of National Sample Survey Organisation (NSSO) clinched the men's singles title in the ongoing two-day table tennis tournament, organised by the Central Government Employees Welfare Coordination Committee (CGEWCC) at IIIM complex, here today.
In the final, Mahesh defeated equally good Chand Raina of IIIM 3-0 (12-10, 11-09, 14-12). Earlier, in the semifinals, Chand Raina beat Sunil Bhel of Central Excise in straight sets of 11-07, 11-06, 11-06 while Mahesh trounced Anirudh Sharma of Intelligence Bureau (IB) 11-06, 11-04, 11-09.
In the quarterfinals, played this morning, Chand trounced BK Nautiyal of Principal Controller of Defence Accounts (PCDA) 3-0 (11-01, 11-02, 13-11) while Mahesh registered 3-0 ( 11-05, 11-02, 11-04) win against Bikram Singh of IIIM. In other quarterfinals, Anirudh downed Kuldeep Singh (Central Excise) 3-1 (11-09, 11-08, 08-11, 11-02) and Sunil Behl beat Ashwani Kumar of Central Excise 3-0 (11-09, 11-07, 11-05).

Meanwhile, as per the organisers, the team event in the table tennis meet shall take place tomorrow at the same venue. The organising committee included BS Bhan (chairman sports committee of CGEWCC), Ashok Chadha, Mahesh Sharma, Sanjeev Sharma and Sham Lal Tandotra. |
