Srinagar, Mar 4 : Amid unrestrained Swine flu mayhem, a new controversy erupted in Health department of Kashmir after authorities at Government medical college (GMC) going under severe criticism issued gag orders to officials and Doctors, directing them not to speak to media over H1N1. An official letter under number (No-PS/MC-152790) has been issued to the Medical Superintendents of different hospitals and Doctors directing them not to speak to media over swine flu cases following the wide coverage to Swine flu scare across the state by media agencies and according to sources following the severe criticism to Health officials for failing to identify the disease symptoms on time and tackling the swine flu scare in Hospitals after its outbreak. According to a senior resident, the said letter was handed over to all the senior health officials and Doctors associated with Swine flu handling urging them not to share anything with media. Pertinently nine people have died so far in Jammu and Kashmir due to swine flu outbreak and till date around 250 people were tested positive for H1N1 at SKIMS, besides the number of patients hit by swine flu is increasing with each passing day in Jammu and Kashmir divisions of the state. Sources said that harassment of doctors from higher ups of Health department in Kashmir started from day first after Doctors at SKIMS began sharing information with media secretly about swine flu outbreak in Kashmir and demanded special equipment for themselves. Taking serious note of the alleged gag orders, Doctors Association Kashmir (DAK) ridiculed health officials for issuing gag order asking doctors to desist from speaking on H1N1 to media agencies. President DAK and H1N1 expert Dr Nisar ul Hassan said that gag order is against the fundamental right of a patient wherein he/she has to be informed about the disease and said that it is outrageous that health officials have labeled those doctors who informed public about H1N1 deaths as unscrupulous. "Health officials are threatening doctors who exposed H1N1 deaths of dire consequences which is unacceptable, these doctors by way of public awareness have prevented further loss of human lives and their services in this regard should have been applauded rather than unleashing subjugation against them," added Nisar. He said that health officials concealed H1N1 cases and deaths which led to spread of deadly virus in the community and they are liable for criminal prosecution and alleged that these erring officials ignored outbreak threat and failed in combating H1N1. He added that These officials in order to cover up their inefficiencies and retain their illegally occupied positions are threatening doctors for raising voice against their illegalities and added that these erring officials should be sacked for their criminal activity and removed immediately from their positions so as to rebuild public trust. DAK while appreciating media for covering every news related with Swine flu said that media is playing a vital and responsible role in current H1N1 outbreak and their effective communication of credible and consistent information to public has helped to mitigate the disease burden in the community.
