Jammu, Mar 23: Ten civilians lost their lives and 89 others have injured in shelling by Pakistan along the International Border (IB) in Jammu region between January 2014 and February this year, Minister for Horticulture, Haj and Aquaf, Abdul Rehman Veeri informed the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly on Monday. In reply to a question, the minister told the assembly that the figures came from Arnia, RS Pura, Hira Nagar and Savjian, adding that those displaced in the firing from across the border were provided temporary shelter in government buildings or private houses and were provided basic amenities. He said ex-gratia had also been provided out of District Red Cross Society Funds for the loss of livestock. The Minister also said that a a revised proposal for construction of community type bunkers in identified border villages spread across the districts of Kathua, Samba, Jammu, Rajouri and Poonch has been submitted to the Centre to ensure safety during such instances. Another proposal for a uniform system of compensation for deaths and injuries caused by such firing is also pending the central government's approval. "The scheme also proposes to bring loss of livestock under the ex-gratia scheme. Matter is under consideration of the Government of India", he said. The member of the house Ghulam Nabi Monga, Ajay Sadhotra, Jehangir Hussain Mir, Vibodh Gupta, Yashpal Sharma, Surinder Kumar Choudhary and Shehnaz Ganai raised supplementaries. |
