Mass copying turns into Rs 5 Cr industry in Doda, Kishtwar

Jammu, Mar 23: The menace of mass copying on one or other pretext is ruining the career of thousands of youth in frontier areas of Kishtwar and Doda and it has turned into a Rs 5 crore industry in these areas.
Sources told Early Times some teachers with vested interests promote mass copying on the pretext of militant threat while at the same time a few teachers allow students to cheat in order to achieve good results and save their skin.
Despite numerous complaints about mass copying the Jammu and Kashmir Board of School Education (BOSE) have not taken any action against the students or the people who are promoting the culture of mass copying. "It seems there is a close nexus between BOSE and the people who are assigned examination duties," alleged a source.
"If you want to get pass mark in any examination--- you just need to do one thing i.e. choose your center for examination in Kishtwar," the source added.
Authorities posting selective superintendents and supervisory staff and these people indulging in pre- examination tie up with the students has turned mass copying into a big industry posing a grave threat to the education system of the state.
The another factor which has promoted mass copying in board examinations is the introduction of government job schemes like ReT and appointment of teachers or any other posts by Service Selection Board wherein the Board considers class 12 percentage for selecting a candidate for the job. "Though the SSB has shifted to objective type test paper for teachers and a few other posts, but the menace of mass copying has hit the meritorious job aspirants under the belt," said a source.
While making the appointments under ReT, the selection is purely based on the percentage of marks secured by a candidate in 12th class.
Students leave no stone unturned to ensure that their percentage in 10th and 12th class is good and they spend huge money for it. "Some employees who are involved in this scam charge Rs 8000-10000 for arts category students and Rs 10000-12000 even up to Rs. 20000 for science students and allow them to indulge mass copying. Another mafia which works behind the curtains provides solved question papers within half hour after distribution of question paper inside the center," sources alleged. "The nexus between the board employees and education department is so much deep rooted that without their consent no teacher or master is posted for examination duty. The superintendent and deputy superintendent for examination centers are appointed on the recommendations of board employees," claimed a source.
The trend of demanding money from the students and their parents is an "open secret" in rural areas like Marwah, Dachhan, Warwan, Padder, Chatroo, Nagsini, Saroor, Bhunzwah and other far flung areas of Kishtwar and in many parts of Doda where there is no road connectivity and many times the officials deputed by the BOSE cannot reach there.
"Education is the foundation of every society --- we must not allow anyone to play with the future of students and will not allow anyone to play with the career of students by promoting mass copying--- it will not only ruin the life of the particular student, but also make the society handicapped as no such student with mass copy background will be able to qualify the state or national level examination" said former CEO Kishtwar Lok Nath Butt.
Early Times brought the matter into the notice of Education Minister Naeem Akther and he (Naeem Akther) promised to look into the issue, but even after the assurance from Education Minister, reports of open mass copying in many areas of Kishtwar and Doda, particularly in Chatroo are pouring in and require immediate attention.
