Early Times Report
SRINAGAR, July 27: As militants struck Punjab's Gurdaspur district, it was time for former J&K Chief Minister Omar Abdullah to play an "encounter specialist" on Twitter.
The encounter, which put the country on red alert, found Omar sermonizing like a retired police official who has spent his professional career dealing with gunfights. In his first tweet, Omar said: "The timing of the attack, methodology & location are all eerily similar to attacks in the border belt of Jammu."
In the next tweet, he was supposed to be taken as expert on self-defence in such encounters. "Where the heck are the bulletproof jackets & helmets? Their knees are better protected than their heads & chests!!!!," Omar tweeted while referring to video footage of cops busy with encounter as aired by the news channels.
And then came another tweet when news broke that commandoes from J&K police have rushed to neighboring state to assist the Punjab Police. Omar was so eager to tweet again that this time he made mistakes in his post and instantly had to go for corrections. "No police force has as much experience with these sorts of encounters. Good step," he tweeted.
Omar's number of followers on his Twitter account recently crossed one million mark. The National Conference working president, whose party faced worst defeat in last Assembly elections, misses no chance to tweet. But this what most in the NC dislike.
"Omar acts like a child, which is unbecoming for a politician. He tweets, tweets and tweets only, something which we think was one of the reasons for our debacle in the elections, but he is still not learning any lessons," said a National Conference leader pleading anonymity.
Omar's obsession with mobile phones often put his government into embarrassing situations when he would be caught playing with his time Blackberry. Apart from official meetings and public functions, Omar was often found fiddling with his mobile phone even during Assembly sessions.
His series of tweets today reminded one that Omar is out of job-for nearly a year.
