Early Times Report
Jammu, July 31: Politicians of the lesser state of Jammu and Kashmir are a pampered lot, but eventhough they say all are equal in the eyes of the law, there seem to be different benchmarks for the political class.
For months now, Kewal Krishan Sharma, the PRO of the former Deputy Chief Minister Tara Chand has been leveling serious criminal allegations against him, which include charges as grave as rape, corruption, kidnapping and murder, but it is strange that no cognizance has been taken of these serious charges and no attempt has been made by any government agency to find out the truth behind those allegations.
Appearing in a petition filed against the security cover provided to him, On July 30, KK Sharma created sensation in the open court when he leveled serious allegations against the then Deputy Chief Minister Tara Chand and two senior policemen and said that his life is in danger. He submitted that he stood by his allegations of murder, rape and corruption leveled against the then Deputy Chief Minister Tara Chand.
This was not the first time that he had deposed against the former Dy CM and leveled allegations that invited criminal proceedings. On atleast two earlier occasions, Kewal Sharma had reiterated these allegations before media. Strangely however, neither Police, not any other agency has taken any cognizance of the allegations and tried to carry out fair investigations into them to bring out the truth.
Tara Chand is however not an isolated example of politicians evading investigations in grave criminal allegations; there have been several occasions wherein politicians, including former CM, sitting and former legislators and Ministers have been treated differently and have conveniently evaded legal scrutiny in infamous cases which made headlines and stirred public opinion.
On the contrary however, the commoners have been put to scrutiny with iron hand when similar allegations are made against them. Nagar Singh, who was under trial in the infamous Amandeep Murder Case was named accused in Chopra family murder case after a witness deposed that Nagar Singh was amongst the conspirators of the heinous crime. One Surinder Singh alias Kala recorded his statement under section 164-A of CrPC, wherein he disclosed that he had overheard former MLC Tarlochan Singh Wazir, his brother Ajaib Singh and Nagar Singh, conspiring to get Chopra and his family eliminated. Following a different yardstick altogether, merely on the statement of Kala, the three were made accused in the case.
