Early Times Report

Jammu, Aug 22: Ban on private practice by senior medicos notwithstanding, the doctors are reluctant to adhere to the government order issued in the year 2013 and are continue to make quick bucks through private practice.
If sources are to be believed then some senior doctors officiating as Head of Departments (HoDs) in GMC&H, Jammu have not discontinued private practice despite a government ban on any such activity.
Sources informed Early Times that in order to escape wrath of the authorities concerned the senior doctors have made some precautionary alterations while offering the private services either at their respective residences or at any other places.
"Few senior doctors in Jammu continue to indulge in private practice though they are doing so in a covert manner so as to avoid any punitive action. The modus operandi used by the senior doctors to remain incognito is to prescribe the medication on a plain paper while they are also not displaying any signboards in front of the secret clinics," sources said.
Earlier when the practice was not banned, the doctors used to write medicines on printed prescription slips with their names, qualifications and availability hours clearly mentioned on them while they also exhibit billboards near their clinics. Sources further said that by issuing plain prescription slips, the senior doctors could have managed to save their skins from official action but in doing so they are committing even a bigger blunder as they remain unaccountable in case any wrong medication is prescribed to the patients. "How can senior doctors act in such an irresponsible manner? They are issuing plain prescription slips without any accountability involved while doing so. This is gross injustice with the innocent patients who spend huge money while getting treated from private practitioners," sources said while lamenting the carelessness attitude of few senior doctors involved in private practice.
"Government must act against such senior doctors who continue to defy official order of ban on private practice. The authorities must utilize all its resources to identify the black sheep in the GMC&H, who act as if they are authority unto themselves and have no care for rules and regulations," sources added.
The private practice of senior doctors who officiate as HoDs was banned by the government in 2013. The High Court also dismissed a petition by virtue of which private practice of HoDs in the Government Medical Colleges and their Associate Hospitals viz a viz Dental Colleges of the state was banned in 2014. Yet, the private practice is still being pursued by some senior doctors in the winter capital of the state.
