Early Times Report

Udhampur, Aug 22: While tall claims are being made to restore the pristine glory of revered river Devika in Udhampur, the Tawi, which also meanders through the district has become the polluted river of the area as the Udhampur Municipal Corporation (UMC) and locals are dumping solid waste in it.
Udhampur Municipal Corporation (UMC) have allegedly made the river Tawi of Udhampur their new dumping site. In violation of the norms that the dumping site should be somewhere out of the town or may be under grounded but UMC has made the Jakheni locality its new dumping site which is just 3 kms away from the main town.
Ironically the site which has been preferred by UMC authorities as garbage dumping site is in close vicinity of the river Tawi whose water is used for the domestic purposes by the residents of the area living along the banks of river, but the Municipal Committee has been continuously the dumping garbage into it by keeping thousands of lives on risk.
Though the people have complained the problem to the administration and to the Municipal Commissioner many times before, but they remain silent and nothing have been done since.
Pertinently the river Tawi is the main source of drinking water also for locals and with dumping of garbage the cases of infections and food poisoning have been reportedly increased in these vulnerable areas. Here it also needs to mention that former Deputy Commissioner Udhampur Yasha Mudgal has allotted a place to the UMC at Maand, where the dump can be stored and disposed off but the municipal committee has put the life of thousands on risk ignoring the designated place. Locals lamented that the things become from bad to worse in rainy season when the dump flows with all the bacteria and infectious material into the Tawi affecting that health of people living in downstream areas
When contacted Municipal Commissioner K K Chanotra said that this has been using just for temporary purpose as the work on project for the permanent storage of garbage is on and this practice will be stopped.
