Early Times Report
JAMMU, Aug 22: An undertrial, who was allegedly involved in a conspiracy to eliminate witnesses in the Amandeep Singh murder case, managed to escape on Saturday from Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) where he was admitted for over one month.
Sumit Choudhary, alias Sunny Baba, was arrested in March 2011. He was referred from Kot Bhalwal jail to the GMCH Jammu on July 11 and was admitted in the emergency ward of the hospital. Though he was not suffering from any major ailment, Sunny was kept in the emergency ward on the orders of a senior doctor who was influenced by a Cabinet Minister.
Ironically, Sunny for most of the time remained in the disaster ward of the hospital and not in the emergency ward which in under CCTV surveillance for round the clock.
Two days ago, name of Sunny came up after the shootout at Vikram Chowk in which a man received bullet.
Meanwhile, the policemen deployed for Sunny's custody at the hospital have been detained and are being questioned.
A case (FIR No. 91/15) under sections 223, 224/109 of RPC has been registered at Police post GMCH against ASI Krishan Chand, HC Varinder Singh, selection constables Jia Lal and Santokh Raj, constables Shabir Ahmed, Noor Hussain, Pawan Singh, and Rashpul Dass.
Sunny had hatched a conspiracy to kill Wazir, the witness in the Amandeep murder case. The conspiracy to kill Wazir was allegedly hatched in the presence of Superintendent of Udhampur District Jail inside Kot Bhalwal jail.
Even money was paid to the contract killers inside the prison and Mirza Saleem Beig, the Jailor, and another accused Nagar Singh, alias Nago, were also arrested.
The matter came to light after the arrest of Sunny, who was allegedly hired by the main accused, Nagar Singh, to kill the witnesses.
Police had recovered a semi-automatic pistol, a country-made revolver, a German revolver and four live cartridges from Sunny.
Amandeep, son of former National Conference (NC) legislator Dipinder Kour, was allegedly shot by Jatinder Singh alias Raja and Royal Singh in August 2009 at his residence.
Three police officers, including former SSP Jammu, Manohar Singh, are among those who were arrested by the police in 2009 on charges of changing the pistol used in the killing of Amandeep.
Five others, including Jatinder's father Nagar Singh and his two uncles, Ujjagar Singh and Rakesh Singh, were also arrested for alleged destruction of evidence.
