40 houses damaged in landslide, people shifted to camps

Kathua, Aug 22: Villagers residing in Shoara, Panchayat Ucha Pind in Ramkot of Kathua district have nightmarish experience on August 20 when entire Ucha Pind hamlet in Ramkot tehsil of Kathua district suffered huge damage after a massive landslide hit the village but the inhabitants managed to survive.
According to local reports the landslides struck Ucha Pind at about 10 pm when the people were about to sleep and they ran out of their houses and managed to survive.
"About 40 houses and a primary school were damaged while some structures got completely perished as they came under the debris of landslide and mud coming downhill, locals recalling the nightmare said, adding, "all houses and school buildings have been extensively damaged. However, the people managed to come out timely and had it occurred some hours late the things will be horrifying and tragic." Narrating the ordeal the concerned Sarpanch Puran Chand said he immediately rushed to spot and launched rescue operation evacuated villagers and livestock. He however regretted that despite having information about landslide, nobody from administration side visited the spot to help the 250 stranded people. People alleged on administration for not asking their grievances for two days and superficially offered few food items when people blocked link road.
Sarpanch -the village head said that he already had alerted Tehsil administration for scope of landslide in affected area for few days but nobody took the information seriously.
Two villagers Mohinder Singh and Talo Din also accused administration of launching delayed launch of rescue operation despite knowing the gravity of situation. They demanded due compensation, resettlement in safe places and 5 lacs to each affected families with immediate effect. When ET approached locals and found minors crying in hunger while villagers accused administration of distributing food items and shifted people to safe places only in a bid to face saving. While interacting to media persons, Sub District Magistrate (SDM) Billawar Rajeshwar Singh Chark said administration is assisting the affected people and also has shifted affected people to Government Middle and Primary School, Baddu.
He said administration has distributed 15 Kg flour, 10 kg rice and 2 kg sugar while Kerosene, 31 tents and utensils will also be provided very soon.
Sandeep Dubey, Tehsildar Ramkot informed that administration is on job and has identified land for resettlement, conducted survey for losses and declared all houses damaged/ unsafe for compensation under SDRF norms. He also said administration has provided basic amenities and compensation will be announced soon.
Meantime Sushil Sharma, ADC Rural Development Department also rushed on the spot and sought BPL status of all affected families. He ensured them to provide assistance under BPL & Indira Awas Yojna, (IAY). He said if anybody does not fall under BPL & IAY, they will also be assisted under other rural development scheme
