BARAMULLA, Sept 29: As the drug addiction among the youth is on rise parents are worried about their children. But the law enforcing agencies are least bothered about the crimes which are taking place in day in and day out in various parts of North Kashmir.
The international trade in narcotics and psychotropic substances has become so lucrative a 'business' today that many organized drug mafia and syndicates have surfaced all over the world, and Kashmir has become a hotspot for drugs where teenagers are getting involved.
Sources told Early Times that there is an easy availability of drugs in various areas of Sopore like Batpora, Arampora, Chankhan, Tarzoo, Bomai and Sopore. Smuggling of drugs like cannabis, opium and heroin is taking place in the evening time in these and the other areas.
Similar reports are also pouring in from other places of Baramulla town like Khawaja Bagh, Flood Colony, Old Town, Azadgunj and upper hills of Dardpora and Kandi belts.
A parent wishing anonymity said that drug addiction in Baramulla district has assumed menacing proportions with youth increasingly found to be getting involved in more and more acts of burglary in order to fund their needs for drugs and other substances.
"I believe that the drug addicts kick start the habit of stealing from their own homes in order to buy themselves a dose. The young college going drug addicts often cheat their parents off the extra money on the name of tuition fees and pocket money," said a parent.
He said wings of district administration including police, CID sleuths and other social activists have become mere spectators, as they must come forward to take serious action against drug addicts.
"Drug culture is fast engulfing the present society especially the young ones. A large population of youth is lured to drugs due to their easy availability and also due to the fact that Jammu and Kashmir is a transit place for international movement of drugs where they are locally cultivated and manufactured," said another parent.
As per a recent study carried out by a local NGO CAUSE (Concerned About Universal Social Empowerment), drug addiction in Kashmir is increasing at an alarming rate with growing number of minors and youngsters involved in the act.
However the pilot study revealed that 22 percent graduates, 6 percent post graduates and over 2 percent PhD holders in the state are involved in it. Pertinently, there are 35,412 unemployed educated youth in Baramulla.
Moreover a random survey carried out by a local NGO revealed that 31 percent of the population between 17 to 47 years confined to certain localities is involved in drug abuse and trafficking in the district.
