Early Times Report
JAMMU, Sept 29: There has been no let-up in crime targeted against women in J&K, where at least one woman is raped everyday. 331 cases of rape and 3,321 of other nature, including 1,421 of eve-teasing, were registered at different police stations across the state last year, while in the past three months of this year, the number of such cases stands at nearly two dozen. This exposes the hollow claims of the state police that they are committed to the protection of women. At any given time, eve-teasers can be spotted at different city crossings and outside women's colleges but the "vigilant" cops take no notice of their activities. Police sources said in 204 of the last year's 331 rape cases, the victims were in the age group of 18-30 and added that of the total 331 rapes, 307 were committed by the victims' close acquaintances, including 61 neighbours, 21 relatives and six family friends. Of the 3,321 other cases registered at different police stations, five were of dowry deaths, 20 of attempt to rape and 813 of kidnapping, sources said. Sources said nearly two dozen rape cases were reported to police in July, August and September months of this year. In July, one case was registered against a father-in-law at Gharota police station, an army jawan at Domana police station and a Congress leader at Rajouri. One case of rape of a minor girl was reported at Akhnoor. In August, cases were registered at Batote in Ramban, Rajouri, Sainik Colony, Bagh-e-Bahu, Domana, Nawabad (against a hotel employee), Gharota (against two brothers), Mahore (against a school teacher) and Gandhi Nagar (against a step-father). Six cases of crime against women were registered in September. These included a case of 'attempt to kidnap' at Janipura, an abduction case at Khour and rape cases at Mendhar, R S Pura, Bakshi Nagar and Domana. |
