Law Minister's statement adds fuel to fire

Early Times Report

Srinagar, Sept 29: J&K Law Minister Basharat Bukhari's statement over sacking of two law officers by the Government is likely to aggravate ongoing crisis sparked by the beef ban.
On September 22, Additional Advocate General Vishal Sharma and Deputy Advocate General Parimoksh Seth were sacked for "failing to articulate" the Government's position against the High Court's September 9 order that directed the administration to strictly enforce the 1932 law that bans beef across the State.
The sacking order was issued by the Law and Parliamentary Affairs Ministry Basharat Bukhari of the PDP. As the BJP has been pitching for the reinstatement of the two officers, the stern opposition by the PDP indicates that all is not well with the coalition Government.
Bukhari has, in fact, added fuel to the fire by saying that he would not reinstate the sacked officers at any cost. He said if there is pressure on him to recall the duo, he would "prefer to resign straightaway."
Sources told Early Times that the Law Minister did not make such a statement on his own but after thorough consultations with his party leadership. "Bukhari is a junior minister and a political novice. He could not afford to issue such a statement. It's clear that he has been rather directed by the PDP leadership to issue the statement," said a PDP insider. She said contents of the controversial statement were thoroughly thrashed by the party leadership before ordering the Law Minister to go public.
Sources said the BJP has been pitching from day one for reinstating Sharma and Seth. "At a time when relations between the PDP and the BJP have hit all-time low, the statement of the Law Minister has sent a loud and clear message about the position of his party over the issue," said sources.
Interestingly, the Law Ministry has not revealed the reasons behind sacking of the two law officers after the High Court ordered ban on sale and purchase of beef in J&K. Also, reasons for terminating the services of the two law officers have not been mentioned in the sacking order.
Sources said the BJP is under tremendous pressure over the issue and RSS too is not happy with the BJP Ministers. "Despite being part of the Government, the BJP has not remained assertive and dominant over its ally PDP," said sources.
