BJP turns secular for power, Congress turns rightist to win over people's trust
Roles reversed in Jammu

Early Times Report

JAMMU, Sept 29: Strange things are happening in Jammu region. Those who used to masquerade as champions of the Jammu cause and national cause in the State have turned secular overtime. They have joined the same Kashmiri-dominated and Kashmir-centric system that they opposed all through their life. The case in point is the BJP and its mentor, the RSS. Both have abandoned Jammu region and joined the pro-Kashmir crusade in their bid to enjoy political power.
In Jammu & Kashmir, secularism means pro-Kashmiri Muslim and anti-Hindu, anti-Jammu and anti-Ladakh policies. In other words, those who in Jammu and Ladakh fight for the nation, demand abrogation of Article 370 and demand equal rights for the neglected people of Jammu region and Ladakh are considered rightist, communal and anti-Kashmir and anti-Kashmiri Muslims.
In the past seven months, the Sangh Parivar not even once defended the Jammu cause.
Nor did it defend the national cause. Similarly, the Sangh Parivar, which used to give bandh calls and organize dharnas and protest marches to condemn the communal policies of the State Government, not even once directed its cadres to come on to the streets to make common cause with the protesting people of Jammu region. Contrarily, it consistently sought to defeat the people's cause by defending the Kashmir-centric decisions taken by the coalition Government.
Did it not work hard to defeat the Jammu's massive movement for the establishment of AIIMS by roping in some important leaders of the movement, including a section of the legal fraternity? It is a fact. Again, is it not a fact that the BJP did nothing whatever to force its coalition partner to withdraw the Jazya tax on Mata Vaishno Devi pilgrimage, withdraw the order that made Urdu compulsory for the Naib Tehsildars' test or force the PDP to withdraw the order that sacked two law officers, both belonging to the RSS-BJP, over the beef eating issue?
All this should establish that the BJP has turned secular, nay ultra secular. On the other hand, the Congress, which before the formation of the PDP-BJP coalition Government was known for its fake secular credentials and which always played the Kashmiri games to enjoy power at the cost of the people of Jammu region, has sought to fill the space the BJP has created by becoming ultra-secular. And the man who has taken the lead to capture the space vacated by the BJP is none other than Sham Lal Sharma, Senior vice-president of Pradesh Congress Committee and former Cabinet Minister.
That the Congress leadership from Jammu has turned "rightist" for political expediency could be seen from what Sham Lal Sharma said on Monday while launching a scathing attack on the BJP and demanding from it unconditional apology. Launching a scathing attack on the ruling PDP-BJP Coalition Government, he said that the political environment in Jammu & Kashmir was never as fragile and alarming as it turned under the present regime of the "opportunists". In fact, he questioned the BJP and PDP coalition to know what type of popular rule they established in the State in March last and charged it with dragging the State and its people to 16th century. He attacked the coalition government for imposing a blanket ban on all kinds of internet services not only in Valley but in Jammu as well and accused the coalition Government of forcing "all trade, essential services and students along with common man to horrible isolation from rest of the world".
Not only this Sharma used a very strong language for the BJP. He said: "The BJP has stabbed the people of Jammu from back and violated the peoples mandate to join government in J&K. The people of Jammu region had voted for BJP under the misguided notion that it will hold its ground firmly and would act as a watchdog of Jammu's genuine interest…The BJP will have to pay through its nose for anti-Jammu and anti-national policies. The people from Jammu province have not voted for the BJP to get a shabby treatment. This so-called pro-India and pro-Jammu party has relegated them to background. The manner, in which it transferred the sanctioned AIIMS for Jammu to Kashmir valley, imposed Jazia on lakhs of pilgrims visiting holy shrine of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi, made Urdu compulsory for Naib Tehsildars' tests, sacrificed Additional Advocate General and Deputy Advocate General from Jammu, no Government in the State has ever insulted the people of Jammu province so brazenly to remain in power like the BJP did," he said.
Not content with all this, he also tore into BJP leader and Deputy Chief Minister Nirmal Singh for his double-speak or for his voice of untruth. He said that the Deputy Chief Minister had made "false claims that the Coalition Government would implement ban on cow slaughter and beef eating with full force" and asked him and other BJP leaders to "tender unconditional apology for hurting the sentiments of people of the State". "People of Jammu will not forgive the BJP for the dirty politics," he further said, and reassured the people of Jammu region that the Congress party "will discharge its duty as an opposition party to safeguard the interests of all the sections of the society". He, in addition, urged the people of Jammu region to see through BJP game plan and isolate it in their own interest.
What he said was what the Sangh Parivar, especially its political organ, the BJP, used to say day in and day out till not so long ago. Whatever the motive, the change of heart on the part of the Congress leadership from Jammu region augurs well for the future of the people of the region. It is hoped that Sham Lal Sharma and others in the Congress would stick to what they said for all the times to come. Credit for this change of heart also goes to the Jammu & Kashmir National Panthers Party, which has been putting all efforts to expose the enemies of Jammu and the country and advocating the Jammu cause in a big way.
