Malai villagers facing threat of land slides, soil erosion

JAMMU, Oct 5: As the threat of land slides and soil erosion looms large over Malai village in Drabshala tehsil of Kishtwar district the people of the area have made an appeal to the Union Minister Dr Jitendra Singh who also represents, Kathua -Udhampur and Doda Constituency in Lok Sabha to adopt the village under PM's Adarsh Gram Yojna.
The village which is inhabited by 80 householders are in perturbed situation since last one year after the heavy rains in September last year as the threat of land slides and soil erosion increased. In case immediate steps were not taken the entire village will be buried under land slides said Sanjay a resident of the area.
He said the people of the area have made many representations before the district administration and despite forwarding the case to Divisional Commissioner Jammu for sanction of funds so that the people are shifted to alternative places to avoid any catastrophe in future nothing ahs been done so far.
He said the people in the area are very poor and the local MLA has also ignored them over the years.
The District administration had also constituted a team to look into the problem and submit a detailed report but to no avail.
Sanjay said ``there can be any eventuality in future in case pre-emptive steps were not taken'' . ``We apprehend a Sadal type situation is not repeated in Malai'', he added.
He said the people in the village are poor who have no source of income except grazing their cattle. The land erosion is also posing a threat to the pastures in the area, he added.
Meanwhile a delegation from remote area of village Malai in Tehsil Drabshala in Kishtwar district led by Tara Chand Parihar, chairman Panchayat Sangana met Dr Jitendra Singh and apprised him of the problem.
The delegation while expressing serious concern over the soil erosion and land slides in the area said that they were facing serious threat and their lives are in great danger in case immediate steps wee not taken.
The delegation informed the Union Minister that there would be any catastrophe in future in the area and stressed on pre-emptive measures be taken. They said that the people feel scared as the threat of land slides looms large during rainy season and the situation can aggravate during Winter.
The delegation informed Union Minister that despite approaching the administration several times it failed to take steps so that the people are relieved from the worries.
The delegation appealed, Dr Singh to adopt the village under Prime Minister's Adarsh Gram Yojna.
Dr Singh informed the delegation that as he had already adopted four villages under the scheme it will not be possible for him to adopt any more village this year. But he assured the delegation of keeping the village on priority for the next year besides taking up the issue with the district administration.
